Tatnell Runs 11th in Media.com Outlaws Shootout
KNOXVILLE, IA (June 16) -- Brooke Tatnell put together another consistent run for Woodward Racing Saturday, driving the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee into 11th place in the Media.com Outlaws Shootout at Knoxville Raceway.
Tatnell, who ran ninth in the World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Knoxville Raceway on April 28th, was Saturday's eighth-fastest qualifier but he knows he would have been in much better shape if he had he run better in the Fourth Heat Race.
"We got a decent finish out of it, but it wasn't one of our better runs," Tatnell said. "We qualified well, but, basically, we got beaten by rubber in our heat race. We didn't take a chance of moving around like we have at other tracks lately, so we got shoved out of a transfer spot (in the Crane Cams Dash). Donny (Schatz) moved around and found some rubber and got by us. If you miss the dash, you've shot yourself in the foot. We qualified well, but we started 15th (in the feature). That heat race was so critical.
Knoxville's weekly guys do a good job and make it tough. You've just got to make the dash, but it's really tough on a rubber-down racetrack. That was very unfortunate, especially for a TV race. We need to put on the best show we can to show the people outside of dirt-track racing what we're all about, but when you get a rubber-down racetrack it doesn't provide a good showing. They re-grated the racetrack and opened it up for better racing and allowed us to give the fans something back. We had grooves on the top and the bottom and the middle groove was definitely the slower one. They definitely made the right call on the racetrack."
The five-time World Series Sprintcar champion fell behind Dennis Moore Jr. and Jason Solwold early in the 25-lap main event, but regained those positions eight laps later and continued moving forward. Tatnell raced past Paul McMahan with four laps remaining to claim 11th place.
"We dropped back, but toward the end of the race we started charging through," Tatnell said. "It would have been a lot better if we had qualified for the dash in the heat race.
"I think we kept the momentum we had going into Knoxville. We just have to eliminate minor mistakes. We had a couple in the pits and I made some errors on the racetrack that cost us. We're starting to gain some consistency and we've made improvements, but we still have a ways to go."
The Media.com Outlaws Shootout was the inaugural event in the "SuperClean Summer of Money," a series of World of Outlaws telecasts on ESPN2 every Sunday between June 17th and August 5th. Saturday's race was televised at 11 a.m. EDT Sunday.
Woodward Racing will be back in World of Outlaws action Wednesday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, MO, then head to Dodge City Raceway Park for the Boot Hill Showdown Friday and Saturday.
