Mark Kinser Completes National Open Sweep By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (September 30) - From the instant he arrived for the Williams Grove National Open Friday, Mark Kinser was a man on a mission. He had one thought in mind - win the $25,000 first prize. Mark was less than two laps from winning last year's National Open championship when disaster struck, allowing his cousin, Steve, to win the event for the third time in five years. Mark, who led all 20 laps in Friday's Preliminary Feature, continued his dominance Saturday with a flag-to-flag victory. "It's great to win after coming so close last year," Mark told the standing-room-only crowd after hugging his father, car owner and crew chief, Karl Kinser. "I'd like to thank my Dad and the crew. We have a great team." The victory was Mark's 13th of the year and the third of his career at Williams Grove Speedway. Kinser earned the right to start the 40-lap championship feature on the pole by driving the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to victory in the Snap-on Tools Dash. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and retained first place when his cousin tried to pass him in turn one. Mark opened a six-car-length advantage within three laps, and was a half-straightaway ahead three laps later. Steve narrowed the gap to 10 car-lengths when the leaders caught the backmarkers eight laps into the race. Steve closed to within five car-lengths of the lead in dense lapped traffic the next time around, but was unable to get any closer. Fourth-row starters Sammy Swindell and Dave Blaney started making their way to the front during lap 10, passing fast-qualifier Todd Shaffer for fifth place, then exchanging the position two laps later. Mark extended his advantage to a half-straightaway as Swindell steered his #1 Hooters Gambler deep into the third corner to pass Billy Pauch for third place late in the 15th lap. Although the left rear brake line on his #11 Quaker State Maxim broke midway through the race, Steve managed to gain on Mark in lapped traffic. But a quick move past a pack of backmarkers on the back straightaway enabled Mark to open a 15-car-length lead with 18 laps remaining. After passing Stevie Smith for fourth place on successive laps, Swindell and Blaney started battling Steve for second place during lap 28. Mark was 3/4-of-a-straightaway ahead his closest pursuers when Sammy executed an inside move in the second corner to pass Steve for the runner-up spot the next time around. Swindell's sprinter started smoking with 10 laps remaining. He was gaining on Mark when his engine exploded three laps later, bringing out the only caution flag in the fast-paced race. With Dave Calaman separating the leaders on the ensuing restart, Mark raced away from Steve. "The King of the Outlaws" was trying to keep pace with Mark when he hooked the cushion in turn three, however, which sent his front tires into the air and allowed Mark to open a half-straightaway advantage. Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into the second corner to pass Steve for the runner-up spot early in the 36th lap. Danny Lasoski and Smith exchanged fourth place with two laps remaining. "The Dude" won a back-straightaway drag race, only to have the two-time National Open champion thread the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim between him and the inside guard rail to regain the spot seconds later. Mark lapped half the field and took the checkered flag with "The Buckeye Bullet" racing through turn four. Steve held off Smith and Lasoski for third place. Rounding out the top 10 were Jac Haudenschild, Greg Hodnett, Pauch, Jeff Swindell and Second Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg. Hodnett received his eighth Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for passing 12 cars en route to the seventh-place finish.
