SWINDELL PASSES MARK KINSER LATE TO WIN GROVE OPENER By Richard Day MECHANISCSBURG, PA (August 4) - Sammy Swindell hasn't been the luckiest of drivers lately. He hopes Thursday night's victory in the World of Outlaws' opener at Williams Grove Speedway changes that. Swindell drove the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins past polesitter Mark Kinser on the front straightaway as the leaders took the white flag and beat him across the finish line for his first victory in a Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout Preliminary Feature this year. "We've had a lot of bad luck this year," Swindell told the near- capacity crowd from victory lane. "We've been fast, but we just haven't had much luck. "I thought bad luck would get me again tonight. I passed Steve (Kinser), but the yellow came out. After that, I figured Steve would get past Mark." Swindell passed "The King of the Outlaws" deep in the first corner midway through the race, but the pass was nullified when former Williams Grove track champion Donnie Kreitz, Jr., stopped on the back straightaway with a rear suspension problem. Steve took the high line into the third corner when the green flag replaced the yellow and jumped the cushion, allowing Sammy to pass him for the runner-up spot. Within seconds after the leaders entered lapped traffic during the 19th lap, Mark allowed his #5M Maxim to slide over the cushion in turn three, and Sammy narrowed the gap. Swindell out-dragged Mark down the front straightaway and beat him under the checkered flag by three car-lengths. Steve earned his ninth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year after circling Williams Grove's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 18.492 seconds. He picked the #4 inversion pill, putting Mark on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. Mark beat the Swindell brothers - Jeff and Sammy - across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 20-lap Preliminary Feature on the pole. Mark burst into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the feature. Jeff kept pace with Mark as Steve raced past Sammy during the opening lap. Bobby Davis, Jr., a former World of Outlaws and Williams Grove champion, drove his #4 J&J past Todd Shaffer, Jac Haudenschild and Fred Rahmer during the first two laps, and took fourth place from Blaney with a low move into the third corner two laps later. Mark was 12 car-lengths ahead of the field when Steve and Sammy passed Jeff for second- and third-place, respectively, during the sixth and seventh laps. His lead disintegrated however, when Kreitz brought out the first caution flag late in the 10th lap. The green flag waved for only an instant before Craig Keel brought out the yellow again when he stopped between turns three and four. On the ensuing restart, the Swindells took the low line past Steve while Mark quickly opened a three-car-length advantage. Sammy stayed within five-car-lengths of Mark as the leaders raced away from the field, and almost passed him as they entered the fourth corner with three laps remaining. Sammy, a five-time World of Outlaws "A" Feature winner at "The Grove," executed the winning pass in heavy lapped traffic with the white flag flying the next time around. Jeff finished the Preliminary Feature in third place, ahead of Steve, Haudenschild, Greg Hodnett, Rahmer, Davis, Blaney and Lance Dewease. Hodnett, the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, won the "B" Feature and started the evening's main event on the sixth row. He steered the #8TW Kele & Associates around six sprinters to finish in sixth place.
