Mark Kinser Dominates Williams Grove National Opener By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (September 29) - When the 1995 season opened, Mark Kinser wanted to start anew and bury the past. He started by taking on his father, 14-time World of Outlaws champion Karl Kinser, as his car owner. In recent days, Mark has been atoning for some past disappointments. He put the haunting memory of losing the lead in the Amoco Knoxville Nationals behind him by winning the World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Knoxville Raceway Wednesday. Two days later, Mark erased the nightmare of being victimized by a blown engine while leading the 1994 Williams Grove National Open when he dominated Friday's opening-night festivities. "The #5M Wirtgen Maxim ran perfect," Mark told the standing-room- only crowd from victory lane. "It means a lot to have a good spot in the feature. After almost winning last year, the $25,000 (first prize) is what we want." Mark earned $4,000 for winning his fourth Skoal Outlaw Series Preliminary Feature of the year. He also received his 21st EcoWater Fast-Time Award this season for pacing the qualifying session with a 17.746-second lap around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Kinser, winner of the World of Outlaws main event at Williams Grove on August 4th, picked the #0 inversion pill and won the Vivarin Dash from the pole. Steve Kinser, the defending National Open champion, executed a last-lap pass of Stevie Smith to join his cousin on the front row in the feature. Mark burst into the lead and Keith Kauffman passed Smith as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. Steve took the low line into the fourth corner late in the opening lap, but was unable to take the lead. The Kinser cousins' battle for first place took them 10 car- lengths ahead of Kauffman late in the second lap. Kauffman started gaining on Steve as Mark opened a five-car-length advantage during the next two laps. Mark was 10 car-lengths ahead of Steve when he caught the backmarkers midway through lap eight. He extended his advantage to 15 car-lengths two laps later when Steve slowed in dense lapped traffic. Smith caught Kauffman early in the 12th lap, and steered the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim deep into the second corner to complete the pass for third place. The caution flag was flying the next time around, when First Snap- on Tools Heat Race winner Kevin Gobrecht stopped in turn four with a broken rear end. Steve steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the high groove as the race resumed, but was unable to pass Mark. Jeff Swindell was racing around 1993 National Open champion Donnie Kreitz, Jr., in the first corner with five laps remaining when they collided. Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg slowed as Swindell spun, and was hit by Fred Rahmer, who flipped onto the top of the guard rail. The red period gave Jac Haudenschild's crew time to fix the broken accelerator pedal on the #22 Pennzoil Maxim. Steve made one last run at the lead as the race resumed, but Mark was equal to the challenge. He opened a 10-car-length advantage within a lap, was 20 car-lengths ahead two laps later, and won with 3/4-of-a- straightaway to spare. "Dad made some changes on the red that really helped," Mark said. "The car handled even better those last five laps." Smith followed the Kinser cousins across the finish line. Rounding out the top 10 were Billy Pauch, Kauffman, Todd Shaffer, Kreitz, Hillenburg, 16th-starting Dave Blaney and Danny Lasoski. Haudenschild raced into 11th place from inside the 10th row.
