Sammy Swindell Wins U.S. Dirt Nationals By Richard Day HARTFORD, MI (October 12) - Sammy Swindell has raced in the shadows of the Kinser family for much of his career. His 26th-lap pass of the Kinser cousins Saturday at Hartford Speedway in the U.S. Dirt Nationals' championship feature put him in the spotlight again, however. Swindell, the Skoal Outlaw Series champion in 1981 and 1982, drove his #1 Channellock Gambler into the high groove in the fourth corner with 4 1/4 laps remaining to pass Mark Kinser, Steve Kinser and a lapped car and held on for the $9,000 victory. "Early in the race, I took it easy trying to find the best line," Swindell told the capacity crowd following his 10th victory of the year. "I didn't want to wear my tires out, either. We made the wrong choice on tires Friday, but not tonight." "With about 10 laps to go, I figured the high groove was the best one for me. I only passed one car in the low groove; the rest were on the high side." Mark Kinser, the leader in the World of Outlaws points race, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash for the second straight night. Swindell, the second-fastest qualifier in the 46-car field, started the five-lap race outside the third row and raced into second place for the other front-row starting position in the feature lineup. Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and opened an eight car-length advantage as cousin Steve and Sammy exchanged the runner-spot during the first five laps. Keeping his #11 Quaker State Maxim in the low groove allowed Steve to gain on his rim-riding cousin during laps six and seven. "The King of the Outlaws" caught Mark in turn one the next time around, and passed him for the lead as the #5M Wirtgen Maxim slid out of the low groove in the second corner. Mark challenged his cousin during the ninth- and 12th-lap restarts, but Steve opened a 10-car-length advantage when Mark slid out of the low groove in turn two midway through the race. Swindell was challenging Mark for the runner-up spot when Steve entered lapped traffic during the 18th lap. At that point, "The King of the Outlaws" started racing in the rubber-laden low groove. While the Kinser cousins raced in the inside line, Swindell rode the rim around Hartford's high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. He gained ground as Steve's and Mark's cars started pushing in the corners with 10 laps remaining. Sammy caught the Kinsers in dense lapped traffic early in lap 26, and executed the winning move in the fourth corner seconds later. Mark passed Steve for the runner-up spot with a low move in turn four the next time around. Swindell was six car-lengths ahead of Mark when he took the checkered flag. Jac Haudenschild finished the Skoal Outlaw Series' 61st "A" Feature of the year in fourth place, ahead of Dave Blaney, Joey Saldana, Jeff Swindell, Paul McMahan, Third Heat Race winner Stevie Smith and Craig Dollansky. Andy Hillenburg was running sixth when the right rear tire on his #2 STP J&J started losing air pressure with two laps remaining. Seventeen cars raced past as he coasted around the track, causing him to finish two laps down in 23rd place. The World of Outlaws' tour heads south for a pair of Texas events this week. The Second Annual Fall Nationals at Battleground Speedway is scheduled for Thursday, while Devil's Bowl Speedway hosts the 23rd Annual Winter Nationals Friday and Saturday.
