Outlaws Cancel Dirt Nationals Preliminary By Richard Day TERRE HAUTE, IN (October 8) - Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series officials canceled Friday's preliminary program at the Eighth Annual U.S. Dirt Nationals when rain made the Terre Haute Action Track unsafe for racing. The series' fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint car racing teams will run a single-program event at the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval Saturday evening, weather permitting. The series will return to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL, Sunday afternoon. Gerry Olson's U.S. Dirt Nationals has followed a long and winding road over the years. Andy Hillenburg stopped a 36-race winless streak last October 10th when he won the U.S. Dirt Nationals at I-55 Raceway. Sammy Swindell won the preliminary and "A" Features at I-55 Raceway October 10-11 in 1997 on his way to his third Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championship. Swindell passed Steve Kinser and Mark Kinser high in the fourth corner with 4 1/4 laps remaining and held on to win the Dirt Nationals at Hartford Speedway on October 12, 1996. Mark Kinser loosened Steve Kinser's two-year stranglehold by winning the U.S. Dirt Nationals with a flag-to-flag victory at Terre Haute on October 14, 1995. "The King of the Outlaws" clinched his 14th Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion by winning the U.S. Dirt Nationals at Terre Haute on October 15, 1994. Kinser swept the Dirt Nationals at Terre Haute on October 15-16 in 1993 en route to another championship. Swindell set quick-time, won the dash and led all 40 laps in the Inaugural U.S. Dirt Nationals at Indiana State Fair Speedway on October 18, 1992.
