KINSER HALTS LASOSKI'S DOMINATION IN SECOND PRELIMINARY PROGRAM By Richard Day ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (February 17) - Last September, when Steve Kinser announced he was going NASCAR Winston Cup racing, the drivers he had beaten for years on the World of Outlaws' tour were both relieved and elated. Nobody was happier than Mark Kinser, however. Not only was the World of Outlaws' throne vacant, his cousin's move to stock car racing gave Mark the chance to join forces with the man who helped Steve win 14 World of Outlaws championships - his father, Karl. "Being a Kinser, I've never really had that much pressure on me," Mark admitted Friday night after winning the Second Preliminary Feature in the World of Outlaws' season-opening event at St. Augustine Speedway. "I've driven for good owners - Ray and Jay Williams and Jim Reid - and they didn't put any pressure on me. Now I'm putting pressure on myself, knowing that my dad is the best. He was a champion before he met Steve, and continued that with Steve. Maybe winning tonight will take some of the pressure off." Mark won just when it appeared that Danny Lasoski might dominate St. Augustine's triple-feature event. For the second consecutive night, "The Dude" earned the Ecowater Fast-Time Award and won the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole. Kinser, only .093 seconds off Lasoski's pace in time trials and right behind him in the Vivarin Dash, started next to "The Dude" in the 20-lap main event. He quickly made it apparent that he was the driver to beat, steering the #5M Wirtgen Maxim around Lasoski to take the lead as the green flag fell. Mark was five car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when Larry Skinner's second-corner flip brought out the red flag. As the race resumed, Greg Hodnett, who passed Sammy Swindell during the opening lap, drove the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim past "The Dude" entering turn three. The field was tightened again two laps later when Jon Eldreth spun to a stop in the fourth corner. But within two laps, Kinser had opened a half- straightaway advantage. He entered lapped traffic during the ninth lap. Mark maintained a comfortable advantage until Lasoski returned to the runner-up spot with two laps remaining. A late charge put "The Dude" within two car-lengths as Kinser took the checkered flag. "It's great to have Stew Murray and Connie Murray here from Wirtgen, the world's largest road-building machine," Kinser said. "They helped me out during the Slick 50 series a couple of years ago, and now they're back for a full sponsorship this year. "We have a great field of cars with the World of Outlaws that could win any race on any night. Danny is running really good, and when I got into lapped traffic I got really nervous. I just stayed there on the bottom and prayed for the checkered flag." Following Mark and "The Dude" under the checkered flag were Hodnett, the Swindell brothers - Sammy and Jeff - Andy Hillenburg, Snap-on Tools Heat Race winners Jac Haudenschild and Stevie Smith, Dave Blaney and Joe Gaerte. Smith, who finished a disappointing 14th on opening night, steered the #71M Ecowater Systems Maxim past six sprinters to finish in eighth place. Rookie of the Year candidate Randy Hannagan's crew worked through the night to build a new #1x Celebrity Dodge Jenkins, only to be heart-broken for the second consecutive night. Randy had the final qualifying spot for the Preliminary Feature in his grasp with six laps remaining in the "B" Feature when his top-wing supports broke, causing him to crash into the first-turn wall.
