Mark Kinser Takes Gold Cup Opener By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 18) - Although Mark Kinser owns qualifying records at five of the six California tracks the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series visits, he has won "A" Features at only two. His lack of success on the West Coast had the defending World of Outlaws champion concerned about his tenure in the #5M Wirtgen Maxim before he won the Preliminary Feature Thursday when the 44th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions opened at Silver Dollar Speedway. "It seems like it's either feast or famine out here (in California)," Mark admitted. "We haven't really run all that great, and sometimes I wonder if I'm not about to lose my ride. Winning this race may have increased my job security. I just hope we can make it back here again Saturday night." Karl Kinser, the car owner of nine Gold Cup champions, won't be firing his son any time soon. "His job is pretty secure," Karl said. "He just needs a little chewing out every once in a while." Mark battled Jac Haudenschild and polesitter Sammy Swindell for more than half the race before taking the lead early in the 14th lap and leading the final 12 for his fifth Preliminary Feature victory of the year. Randy Tiner received the Channellock Fast-Time Award after pacing the qualifying session with a 12.118-second lap. Only 1.749 seconds separated the 38 cars taking qualifying laps around Silver Dollar's high-banked, 1/4-mile oval. Tiner picked the #4 inversion pill, putting Swindell outside the front row in the Vivarin Dash. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader beat polesitter Joe Gaerte across the finish line in the seven-lap race for the right to start the 25-lap main event on the pole. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Haudenschild passed Kinser and Gaerte to take over second place before Mark took third with a third-corner pass of Gaerte late in the opening lap. "The Wild Child" steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim deep into turn four late in the second lap, but was unable to take the lead. He followed Sammy into lapped traffic during lap five. After making another run at Swindell two laps later, Haudenschild's attention was diverted by Kinser, who started challenging him for second place during the eighth lap. Mark veered into the inside groove and won a front-straightaway drag race with "The Wild Child" early in lap nine. Swindell, Kinser and Haudenschild raced nose-to-tail through dense lapped traffic during the race's middle stages. Mark took the lead early in lap 14 with a low move in the second corner. "Sammy had a little bit of a push in one and two, and that allowed me to get underneath him," Mark explained. Brian Bullard took the leaders out of lapped traffic the next time around when he flipped in turn two. Kinser raced away from the field as the race resumed, and caught the backmarkers again three laps later. Haudenschild caught Swindell with five laps remaining. Jac made several attempts to pass him for second before taking the high line around Sammy in turn one with two laps remaining. Sammy regained the position a split-second later, driving his #1 Channellock Gambler ahead of Haudenschild in the second corner. "The Wild Child" made another run at Swindell high in turns three and four as they headed for the checkered flag, but was unable to complete the pass. Kinser took the checkered flag with eight car-lengths to spare. Gaerte held off two-time Gold Cup champion Andy Hillenburg for fourth place. Bobby McMahan finished sixth, ahead of "B" Feature winner Tim Kaeding, Kevin Pylant, Dion Hindi and Chico's Shane Scott. Hindi enjoyed the most productive night of his rookie season on the World of Outlaws' tour, qualifying a career-best eighth- quick and racing in his third Vivarin Dash of the year. His ninth-place run in the feature was also his best of the season. Scott thrilled his hometown fans by racing into 10th place from inside the 10th row.
