Kaeding Wins 43rd Annual Gold Cup Opener By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 19) - Silver Dollar Speedway Promoter John Padjen was holding a winning hand on opening night at the 43rd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. He had a pair of kings - "King of the Outlaws" Steve Kinser and "King of California" Brent Kaeding - lining up on the front row of the Preliminary Feature. It was Kaeding who won the $4,000 pot, however. He led all but one lap and took the checkered flag two car-lengths ahead of two-time defending Gold Cup champion Andy Hillenburg after Kinser crashed out of the lead. "It takes everything we can do just to run with these guys," Kaeding said out of respect for the Skoal Outlaw Series. "We got lucky tonight and beat half of them." Thirty-eight sprinters filled the Silver Dollar Speedway pit area Thursday, with other half of the field scheduled to run an identical program Friday before Saturday's $20,000-to-win main event. Only 1.81 seconds separated the fastest 35 cars in time trials. Joe Gaerte, riding the crest of a pair of second-place finishes at Santa Maria Speedway the previous weekend, was the fastest of them all, circling the high-banked, 1/4-mile oval in 12.661 seconds. He followed Kinser, Kaeding, Hillenburg and World of Outlaws points leader Mark Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. "BK," burst into the lead high in turn four as the green flag fell in the 25-lap feature. He managed to keep his #69 Pioneer Concrete Maxim ahead of the 24-car field despite four cautions in the first six laps. Kinser, winner of nine Gold Cup championships, fell behind Hillenburg during the third lap, but came back with a fourth- corner pass late in lap seven to regain the runner-up spot. Kaeding was five car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers and was entering lapped traffic when the caution flag fell again late in lap 11. Third Quaker State Heat Race winner Jason Statler became the fourth driver to drop out of the race when an engine problem forced him to stop on the back stretch. World of Outlaws rookie Brian Paulus suffered a similar fate two laps later. Kinser caught Kaeding within a lap after the green flag replaced the yellow, only to have "BK" open a four-car-length advantage as Hillenburg started challenging him for second place late in the 14th lap. "The King of the Outlaws" steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the rim, then back into the low groove in an effort to shake Hillenburg for six laps before chasing Kaeding into lapped traffic with five laps remaining. Kinser erased a five-car-length deficit within a lap and moved into position to take the lead early in lap 22. As Kaeding headed into the third corner in the low groove, Hillenburg followed him while Kinser raced into the lead on the outside. "The King of the Outlaws," suffering through the most frustrating season of his career, didn't remain in first place very long, however. He jumped the cushion in turn four and rolled into the wall the next time around. Kinser was credited with a 15th-place finish. With a backmarker restarting between the leaders, Hillenburg was unable to challenge Kaeding during the final two laps and was two car-lengths behind when "BK" took the checkered flag. "We didn't have to deal with that much lapped traffic tonight," Kaeding told the near-capacity crowd from victory lane. "When I was out front, I got cautious in traffic. You really can't do that with these guys, because they're always coming." Mark Kinser finished in third place, ahead of Gaerte, 12th- starting Jac Haudenschild, Greg Hodnett, Kevin Pylant, Joey Saldana, Shane Scott and First Quaker State Heat Race winner Korey Lovell. Hillenburg scored the most points in the preliminary program, qualifying fourth-quick and finishing second in both the Fourth Quaker State Heat Race and the Preliminary Feature. Although Hodnett recorded the fourth-fastest qualifying lap in time trials, he was required to take an extra lap at the end of the session when officials determined the #11H Selma Shell J&J exceeded California's sound regulations. After recording the 11th-fastest lap, he raced past five cars in the main event.
