Kinser Beats Hillenburg in Second Gold Cup Prelim By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 15) - What a difference a year can make. Last September, Andy Hillenburg said he had "beaten the best" after passing Steve Kinser to win the Gold Cup Race of Champions' second preliminary feature. Hillenburg blamed himself Friday for failing to keep his #2 STP J&J ahead of the nine-time Gold Cup champion. "It was obvious I had a faster car than Steve," the defending Gold Gold Cup champion said. "I just made some bad choices in traffic. It was my fault I didn't win the race." Joe Gaerte, who led the first 15 laps from the pole, echoed Hillenburg's sentiments. "I just made a couple of wrong choices in lapped traffic. My engine got warm late in the race, too." It was Kinser, a 10-time winner at Silver Dollar Speedway, who stood in victory lane after the rousing 25-lap race. He burst into the lead from the outside pole as the green flag fell in the feature, only to have Gaerte race past him in the second corner. Gaerte, the 1991 Gold Cup champion, was gaining on the backmarkers as Hillenburg passed Stevie Smith for third place in turn two early in the third lap. Kinser and Hillenburg were closing in on the leader when a steering malfunction caused Troy Newsome to crash into the fourth-corner retaining wall late in lap five. As the race resumed, Gaerte quickly opened a three-car-length advantage as Hillenburg battled Kinser for the runner-up spot. The leaders were approaching lapped traffic late in the 10th lap when Randy Hannagan took his #1x Maxim for a spin in turn four. Hillenburg stayed close behind "The King of the Outlaws" as the green flag replaced the yellow, and passed him deep in the second corner the next time around. He stayed in the low groove to reel in Gaerte as the leaders entered lapped traffic early in lap 14. Gaerte was racing around a pack of backmarkers high in the first corner when Hillenburg passed him for the lead two laps later. Kinser relegated Gaerte to third place with a second-corner pass the next time around. Kinser caught Hillenburg as the leaders entered dense lapped traffic early in lap 18, and steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the rim on Silver Dollar's high-banked, 1/4-mile oval to take the lead in the fourth corner. The next four laps featured some of the closest wheel-to-wheel racing on the 1995 Skoal Outlaw Series tour, as Kinser, Hillenburg and Gaerte battled for position. Hillenburg passed Kinser deep in turn one, only to have him return the favor in the second corner early in the 19th lap. Two laps later, Gaerte took the low line into turn four to pass Hillenburg for the runner-up spot. Hillenburg regained second place with two laps remaining, and was eight car-lengths behind when Kinser took the checkered flag. When asked if racing on short race tracks was fun, Kinser said, "Yeah, it's fun when they end up like this one did." He added that it would mean a great deal to him if he could win the 400th World of Outlaws "A" Feature of his career and his 10th Gold Cup Race of Champions title Saturday night. Smith, the 1993 Gold Cup champion, finished in fourth place, ahead of Greg DeCaires, Jeff Swindell, Lee Brewer, Jr., Jimmy Sills, 19th- starting Shane Scott and "B" Feature winner Sean Fenn. Hillenburg opened the second preliminary program by earning his first EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year. He paced the qualifying session with a 12.276-second lap. Only 1.45 seconds separated the fastest 41 cars in the 45-car field.
