One week remains in Alltel DIRTcar All Star Voting: Schatz, Saldana & Stevie Smith Eligible for $10,000 top prize
Concord, NC-- February 21, 2009--One week remains in the voting for the second annual Alltel DIRTcar All Star and three drivers very familiar to sprint car fans are eligible for the $10,000 top prize. An added bonus this year is that the top vote getter in each of the four divisions that competed in the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida earlier this month will receive $1,000. Voting continues through February 28 at www.alltelallstar.com and via text message at 247253, with the driver's corresponding voting letters also available at www.alltelallstar.com.
Donny Schatz, the three-time and defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion took the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH by storm, claiming four of the six A-Feature events for the sprint cars. The North Dakota native won on opening with the World of Outlaws and was also victorious in the finale for the series at the half-mile, leading all 30 laps after starting fourth and taking the lead on the opening lap.
Schatz opened the weeklong event in impressive fashion with the All Star Circuit of Champions on February 3, where he was relegated to the rear of the field after getting caught up in a first lap accident. He then proceeded to pass every car in the field to pick up the win over the next 25 laps. He would follow that up with another victory the next night as well with the All Stars.
"We're very blessed to have great people in our sport and to have Alltel step up and make this a big event like it is the whole week," Schatz said. "It really makes it fun and it makes it like the Knoxville Nationals. We're just glad to be part of it and we're glad for their support. Hopefully they had fun."
Joey Saldana was victorious in the event on the second night of the season for the World of Outlaws, earning his 40th career A-Feature win with the series. By virtue of his thrilling win, where he charged past Jason Sides on the last corner of the last lap, the native of Brownsburg, Indiana is eligible for the $10,000 top prize.
"I think the biggest thing for me is that my dad was a racecar driver and I'm a second generation driver," Saldana said when asked why fans should vote for him after his win. "This is a very tough sport. I don't think people realize how tough it is. Sometimes I wonder why I even do it, but when you get an opportunity like that, when you have a son and see what he might be going through, or the challenges he's going to face in racing, sometimes it's better to just go to school and try to be good at something, be a doctor, be a lawyer. $10,000 would definitely go a long way toward putting my son through school."
Stevie Smith, who is eighth on the all-time World of Outlaws win list, was victorious during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals on the final night of racing for the All Star Circuit of Champions. The second generation driver used a runner-up finish in the World of Outlaws event on February 8 to wrap up the overall sprint car title in the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia. He finished sixth or better in five of the six races during the week of action at the half-mile, including two consecutive Top-Five finishes with the World of Outlaws to wrap up the his stay in the Sunshine state.
"I'd love to win this $10,000," said Smith after becoming eligible for the Alltel DIRTcar All Star award. "We won a race. I'd love to win another race and the $10,000. I don't want to get greedy, but that'd be really nice."
Voting continues for the 2009 Alltel DIRTcar All-Star through February 28. Each driver that won a feature event during the 12 nights of racing at Volusia Speedway Park is eligible with fans voting online at www.alltelallstar.com through February 28 or by texting their vote to 247253 with the corresponding letter for their driver of choice.
