World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series News & Notes

Concord, NC-- December 15, 2008--The season opening 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series are less than two months away at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, February 6-8. A number of World of Outlaws officials, drivers and team members were recently in the Sunshine State attending the 21st Annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show last weekend in Orlando. Among the highlights of the weekend, was the release of the 2009 World of Outlaws schedule, which features 84-dates from coast-to-coast and a return to Canada for the third consecutive season. Also, a couple of World of Outlaws drivers were honored during the trade show for their performances during the 2008 season.

Driver of the Year: Donny Schatz was recently named the "Driver of the Year" by the North American 410 Sprint Car Poll for the third consecutive season. He was a unanimous choice for the second year in a row, earning all 24 first-place votes. Schatz is one of only two drivers in the history of the North American 410 Sprint Car Poll that have earned a unanimous "Driver of the Year," distinction with 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser being the other, having accomplished the feat three times. The voting panel for the award consists of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers. Schatz's team, Tony Stewart Racing was awarded the "Team of the Year" honor as well.

World of Outlaws drivers represented the top-six spots in the voting and seven of the Top-10 spots in the poll. In total, 13 World of Outlaws drivers received votes.

The North American 410 Sprint Car Poll is an annual awards program of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum Foundation, Inc., of Knoxville, Iowa. All awards will be distributed in the spring of 2009 at tracks throughout North America.

Back Up Front: Craig Dollansky returned to action over the weekend at TeMaura Speedway in Wellington, New Zealand and picked up his fourth career win in the country, driving for the always potent Salter Motorsport team. He picked up the victory over Joey Saldana who is both his teammate in New Zealand and will also be his teammate at Kasey Kahne Racing on the 2009 World of Outlaws trail. For Dollansky, the race was his first full event back in a sprint car after suffering a compound fracture to his right arm at Eldora Speedway on September 19, which required surgery and extensive time to heal.

"I was happy to go there and get this win for the team right out of the box," said Dollansky. "We needed to work on the car some after hot laps and I was a little tentative with the arm. Throughout the night we got the car real nice and I realized that my arm was just fine."

Dollansky and Saldana will continue racing in New Zealand through January 3.

Wild Card for the Wild Child: Jac Haudenschild, who won five times with the World of Outlaws during the 2008 season, including the $50,000 Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway at Silver Dollar Speedway in California, received the 2008 "Wild Card Award" from the North American 410 Sprint Car Poll, which is awarded to a driver that is exciting to watch throughout the entire season. The native of Wooster, Ohio finished fifth in the World of Outlaws championship standings in his first season behind the wheel for the Carnahan Motorsports team.

Racing Down Under: Kerry Madsen recently returned home to Australia to take part in a couple of rounds with the World Series Sprintcars. The native of St. Mary's, NSW, finished eighth this past weekend at Latrobe Speedway in Tasmania. The 2006 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year started the night off by turning the fourth-fastest lap in time trials and also won the fifth heat race en route to earning a spot in the second dash. Madsen will be joined Down Under in a couple of weeks by a number of fellow World of Outlaws drivers.
