Schatz Wins Thriller Down Under
Donny Schatz led only one lap on Friday night at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway in Australia, but it was the most important lap, the last one. The two-time defending Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion charged to the lead off the fourth turn to win a thriller over Garry Brazier, after the latter slipped over the banking in turn three.
The win for Schatz makes him one of the prime contenders for the Bevelite Glass $50,000 Classic on Saturday night, an event that he has won six times in his career, including the last four consecutive years.
Steve Kinser, the 20-time Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion lined up second for the preliminary feature on Friday night and took the lead from fellow American Jason Johnson on the fifth lap. In lapped traffic, Kinser continued to lead over Brazier, Schatz and Johnson.
The 21st lap saw Kinser, Brazier and Schatz running nearly three-wide as they all battled for the top spot. Contact between Kinser and Brazier led to Kinser spinning, with Johnson who had nowhere to go, running into him and flipping. That ended the night for Kinser who won at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway on New Year's Day.
On the restart, Brazier opened a commanding lead over Schatz as the laps wound down. Schatz patiently waited for lapped traffic and that provided the opportunity he needed, as Brazier was negotiating heavy traffic when he went high in the third turn causing his off-track excursion, allowing Schatz to charge low to take the lead and ultimately the win in the preliminary feature.
Brooke Tatnell, who won with the World of Outlaws at Skagit Speedway in Washington in 2007 and has eight career A-Feature wins with the series, finished fifth on Friday night.
After an early spin, reigning World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Kerry Madsen charged back to finish ninth, one spot behind Jonathan Allard who won a preliminary feature with the series in 2007 during the Gold Cup Race of Champions at his home track, Silver Dollar Speedway in California.
Kinser turned the second quickest lap in time trials of the 60 cars that took to the track, with Madsen ninth and Schatz 17th.
In preliminary action, Schatz won the first heat race, with Madsen finishing second, while Kinser finished fourth in the second heat. In the second dash, Kinser was victorious to earn the outside front row starting spot in the A-Feature. Schatz finished fourth in the first dash, with Madsen fourth in the second dash.
The next event at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway will be on Saturday night, with the eighth running of the Bevelite Glass $50,000 Classic.
