Jason Meyers Looks to Keep Gold Cup Trophy in California

Chico, CA-- September 4, 2008--Since the 1978 inaugural Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series season, the Gold Cup Race of Champions has been contested 30 times in the state of California, and just twice has a driver from the Golden State been victorious in it, with Johnny Anderson taking the checkered flag in 1980 and Darrell Hanestad in 1989. Jason Meyers hopes to add one more California driver to that list, if he can with the 55th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions this weekend at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.

The native of Clovis, California first competed in the Gold Cup in 1997 and has six Top-10 finishes in the event, including five in a row. He finished a career-best fourth in the 2003 Gold Cup. Last year he was seventh in the finale of the famed race which drew 103 cars.

"It would mean a lot to win it," shared Meyers. "It would not be about the money. It would be about the race. It would certainly would be one way to top our year off. We still haven't won one of these big races yet and have been second in a lot of them. It sure would be sweet to win one of these big races this year in our home state."

The list of winners in the Gold Cup Race of Champions is a venerable "Who's Who of Sprint" car racing, with 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser leading that list with 12 victories. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that have won the race include: Jac Haudenschild, who has two victories, along with two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana and Daryn Pittman, all who have won it once.

"It's a big race," Meyers said. "Not only does it pays a lot of money, but just being able to go out there and be able to say that you won the Gold Cup is big. It's the most prestigious event on the West Coast and has been for years. It's something that we have hopefully worked hard enough for all year, to put our name on that list of winners."

Meyers won the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway aboard the GLR Investments KPC back in March over fellow Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series driver Paul McMahan. Meyers has four career wins at Silver Dollar Speedway, with two of those coming in the Mini Gold Cup.

"Hopefully that's what it takes," noted the veteran driver of the laps he turned at the ¼-mile earlier this season. "That's why we went back out there this year so that we would be ready for the Gold Cup. I had a great race car that weekend. We look forward to going back with what we learned there and will hopefully be good this weekend."

As is tradition at the Gold Cup, the field will be divided up and take part in qualifying nights, with Meyers who is second in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings set to take to the track on Friday, the second preliminary night. In his last 25 races at Silver Dollar Speedway, Meyers has earned Top-10 finishes in all but one of them.

"You are basically racing half the field on the qualifying night," he explained. "It's not a point's weekend so you can go there and just worry about winning that race. You don't have to worry about points or anything like that. You strictly worry about being the best you can and you are out there to win that race, and that's it. We're looking forward to the weekend, as well as being able to spend some time at home as well."

Meyers and the rest of the drivers will earn event points for the Gold Cup each time they take to the track on their preliminary night, starting with time trials, which bodes well for Meyers, who leads the World of Outlaws with nine fast time honors this season. The event points will be tallied up each night to determine the starting line-up for the Feature events on Saturday night, culminating the $50,000 to-win 40-lap Gold Cup on the always racy ¼-mile, which recently saw a new track record established in time trials.

"The guys that have won it the last few have started in the first few rows," said Meyers. "I've heard that the track has been a lot faster lately and stickier than it has been over the last couple of years. I think that will be good for us. I love racing at Chico when it's fast and sticky. I have a lot of experience at that. Most of these races are pretty hard to win from too far back anymore, because there are so many great cars out here. We'll go at our qualifying night real hard and hopefully we'll have enough points to start at the front on Saturday."

While he will have plenty of family and friends cheering him on this weekend, Meyers and his Elite Racing team do not put any added pressure on themselves. They are preparing the same way that they have for the first 49 events this season. They take each race as they come as they continue their strong 2008 season.

"We treat it just like any other race," Meyers stated. "We are looking forward to getting to spend our off day with some sponsors as well as family and friends. Hopefully then we'll run real good in front of them."

Meyers heads to the Gold Cup with eight A-Feature wins this season with the World of Outlaws and has racked up 44 Top-10 finishes, with a series-best 39 Top-Five performances, as he chases his first series title.

"We're clicking away at it every day," said Meyers. "We've been consistent and consistency will do it. We have been doing that the last couple of months and hopefully we can continue that. These guys have been working really really hard. We have to keep those consistent finishes and not fall out of races."
