SAMMY SWINDELL WINS ROCKY MOUNTAIN OPENER By Richard Day DENVER, CO (July 3) - While Sammy Swindell hadn't raced with the World of Outlaws since the June 16th event at Memphis Motorsports Park, the two-time World of Outlaws champion came up with his most outstanding performance of the year Monday at Rocky Mountain Speedway. Swindell led all 20 laps from the outside pole for his first victory in a Skoal Outlaw Series Preliminary Feature this year as the World of Outlaws opened a double-feature event at Denver's high- banked, 1/2-mile oval. "I've been truck racing, but the crew and I worked on the car while we were home," Swindell said after the race. "I'm feeling more comfortable in the car now." Sammy, the third-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, drove his #1 Hooters Gambler to victory in the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race and earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the front row by following his brother, Jeff, across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Outside the front row had been the best place to start, and it didn't fail Sammy when the green flag fell in the evening's main event. He raced around Jeff in the fourth corner and opened a 10-car- length advantage within two laps. He caught the backmarkers the next time around, and increased his advantage to a half-straightaway while Dave Blaney challenged Joe Gaerte for fourth place during lap six. Swindell continued to race away from the 24-car field as a blown engine in the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim forced Jeff to surrender second place midway through the race. Sammy was a full straightaway ahead of fast-qualifier Jac Haudenschild with nine laps remaining. While Stevie Smith threatened to pass Andy Hillenburg for fifth place, Sammy slowed as he approached heavy lapped traffic late in the 14th lap. Haudenschild, the leader in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, caught Swindell in turn one with five laps remaining. "The Wild Child" was still battling Sammy for the lead three laps later when Lance Blevins stopped his family's #21L Citgo J&J in turn one with a blown engine, bringing out the caution flag and tightening the field. As the green flag replaced the yellow, Sammy quickly opened a comfortable margin. While Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J into the high groove to pass a pack of backmarkers, Hillenburg took the low road into fourth place. Haudenschild was 10 car-lengths behind when Sammy took the checkered flag. Gaerte finished third, while Hillenburg held off "The Buckeye Bullet" for the final automatic starting position in Tuesday's Snap-on Tools Dash. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Smith, 11th-starting Greg Hodnett, Danny Lasoski, Rickey Hood and Randy Hannagan. Sid Blandford, the World of Outlaws' 1994 Rookie of the Year, made his 1995 debut and raced into 11th place from the seventh row. "The Wild Child" received his third EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year after pacing time trials with a 15.467-second, 118.835 m.p.h. qualifying lap. Lasoski, only one point behind Blaney entering the Rocky Mountain event, lost the opportunity to start the Vivarin Dash on the front row when he finished sixth in the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race. He earned the fifth row inside starting position by winning the "B" Feature. TNN: The Nashville Network is televising the Amoco Knoxville Nationals "Live in '95."
