Hillenburg Takes Duel in the Dakotas Opener By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 8) - On a night when six drivers eclipsed the previous single-lap record, Andy Hillenburg was the fastest of the fast. He led all 20 laps in the Preliminary Feature Thursday as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the Second Annual Duel in the Dakotas event at Red River Valley Speedway. "The Luxaire car was running great tonight, and it didn't hurt to start up front," Andy said following his second Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "My guys did a great job, and the Klein engine was strong enough to do the job. I know it's just a prelim, but we'll take any checkered flag we can get. I would like to do it again Saturday, though." Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser got the triple-feature event off to a quick start, lowering the qualifying standard by .714 seconds with a 14.977-second, 120.184-m.p.h., lap around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Kinser received his 18th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for his record-setting effort. It took Mark all last season to earn 18 Vivarin Fast-Time Awards. Hillenburg, the 20th-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field, became the fourth driver to win from outside the front row when he took the checkered flag in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole by winning the Channellock Dash. Hillenburg burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the feature. Jac Haudenschild and Tyler Walker kept pace with the leader while exchanging second place during the opening lap. Danny Lasoski, who ranks second in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings, coasted into the pit area with a mechanical problem during the third lap. Hillenburg was .6 seconds ahead of Haudenschild when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. Sammy Swindell, the defending Duel in the Dakotas champion, steered his #1 Channellock Stealth into the low groove in turn one to pass Walker for third place early in the eighth lap. Kinser relegated Walker to fifth as the engine in the #35 Air Sep Maxim started sputtering the next time around. A mechanical malfunction the #11H Vivarin Eagle forced Tim Shaffer to stop in the second corner midway through the race. Kasey Kahne coasted into the pits during the caution period. Hillenburg was building a comfortable advantage when Craig Dollansky stopped on the back straightaway late in lap 12. Johnny Herrera, who won an "A" Feature at Red River Valley Speedway on July 10, 1993, won a front-stretch drag race with First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Brooke Tatnell to take over sixth place as the race resumed. Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Mark Toews and Shane Stewart were battling for 10th place three laps later when they collided and flipped down the front straightaway. Shaffer, Donny Goeden and "B" Feature winner Daryn Pittman made contact as they tried to avoid the crash, causing Goeden to turn over. Haudenschild kept pace with Hillenburg as the green flag replaced the red, but was unable to surge ahead. As the battle for the lead raged during the final three laps, Hillenburg and Haudenschild circled the track at an average speed of 117 m.p.h. Hillenburg kept his #2 Luxaire J&J ahead of Haudenschild, and was .1 seconds ahead when he took the checkered flag. Swindell finished third, ahead of Kinser, Herrera, Tatnell, Kevin Gobrecht, Stevie Smith, 17th-starting Donny Schatz, and Lance Blevins. Steve Kinser, who swept the Duel in the Dakotas preliminary races a year ago, spun into the retaining wall early in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. Scott McDonald crashed into the #11 Quaker State Maxim, and both cars flipped. "The King of the Outlaws" brought out a backup car and passed 11 sprinters to qualify for the evening's main event. Kinser, a seven-time "A" Feature winner at Red River Valley Speedway, raced past 12 cars to finish 12th in the Preliminary Feature. WoO
