Kinser, Schatz Set To Battle In Landmark World of Outlaws Season
Concord, NC -- Jan. 26, 2007 -- Kinser. Schatz. Lasoski. Dollansky. Saldana. The best of the best once again will go wheel-to-wheel in 2007 for the World of Outlaws championship.
Nearly 30 of the top winged sprint car teams in the world are set to tour the country with the World of Outlaws. Another 20 teams could join in the excitement when the 2007 campaign launches Feb. 9 at the 36th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals Presented By Mopar Speedshop at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.
But while Chad Kemenah and Joey Saldana will be aiming to repeat their World of Outlaws victories in 2006 at Volusia, there's little doubt where fans' eyes will focus. For legend Steve Kinser to clinch his 21st World of Outlaws title he's going to have to contend with Donny Schatz, who has risen from the series' top rookie in 1997 to World of Outlaws champion and Knoxville Nationals winner in 2006.
No doubt there is mutual respect between Kinser and Schatz. Many of the drivers in Schatz's generation race sprint cars because they saw Kinser, of Bloomington, Ind., compete at one time or another at their local dirt track. His impact on the sport cannot be measured. But these guys are racers, too, and would love nothing more than to beat the legend. The last time they battled night in and night out, Kinser came out on top in 2005 as he claimed 20 A-feature triumphs and the championship. But while Kinser was rolling toward the crown, Schatz, who calls Fargo, N.D., home, was gearing up for 2006 by tearing through the end of the season.
Now, as they head to Volusia Speedway Park racing under the same banner and for the same champion's trophy, Schatz is eager to prove that 2006 was the beginning of a championship-winning streak of his own. Each will be aiming for the second victory of their careers at Volusia.
Many of the sprint car stars, including Kinser and Schatz, got an early start on the 2007 season by racing in Australia and New Zealand during the winter. Schatz won five consecutive races before Kinser grabbed two in a row. Schatz then surged back to the front for another triumph, a possible indication of what fans can expect to see all season on the World of Outlaws trail.
