Steve Kinser Wins Pike County Feature By Richard Day

MAGNOLIA, MS (March 14) - It was only a matter of time before Steve Kinser returned to victory lane. "The King of the Outlaws" visited the familiar spot for the 413th time in his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career Friday after winning the "A" Feature at Pike County Speedway. "Everybody (in his crew) has really been working hard, and the #11 Quaker State Maxim felt like it had as much juice as it's had all year," Kinser said. "It had a lot of torque." The #11 needed plenty of torque as Kinser battled his cousin, Mark, for one of the toughest victories of his career. Less than a car-length separated the Kinser cousins when they took the checkered flag. Kinser, the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event outside the second row by following Channellock Fast-Time Award winner Jac Haudenschild, Dave Blaney and Danny Lasoski across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Blaney drove the #10 Vivarin J&J around "The Wild Child" as the green flag fell, and Kinser surged ahead of Lasoski. "The Dude" returned the favor with an inside move in the second corner to take over third place. Kinser started his run toward the front late in the third lap, taking the high line through the second corner to pass Lasoski, then winning a front-straightaway drag race with Haudenschild for the runner-up spot. Steve challenged Blaney for the lead deep in the first corner the next time around, then executed the winning pass in turn two seconds later. Stevie Smith brought out the only caution flag slowing the fast-paced feature early in the fifth lap when a mechanical malfunction forced him to stop his #19 sprinter in turn two. Mark, who started inside the third row, went to work as the green flag replaced the yellow. He steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim deep into the first corner to pass Lasoski for third place during the restart, then took the runner-up from Blaney with an inside move in turn two the next time around. Mark, the defending World of Outlaws champion, caught Steve early in the seventh lap. He tried to pass Steve high in turn two, but was unable to surge ahead. The Kinser cousins burst into lapped traffic two laps later. Steve was equal to Mark's fourth-corner challenges during the 10th and 11th laps, but was unable to build a comfortable lead until he pulled off a daring move on the back straightaway midway through the race. Approaching dense lapped traffic, "The King of the Outlaws" steered his legendary #11 into the high groove to pass Donnie Crawford, then took the low line into turn three to pass his brother, Randy Kinser. His quick bursts through the backmarkers gave Kinser a six-car-length advantage. Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past Blaney on the front straightaway to take over third place late in the 17th lap. The Kinser cousins raced wheel-to-wheel through turn four the next time around, but Steve somehow managed to maintain the lead. "The Dude" drove the #1W Conn West Maxim past Blaney for third place with nine laps remaining. No more than two car-lengths separated the Kinser cousins during the final five laps. They raced side-by-side through turn two early in the 26th lap, and Steve executed another daring move to maintain the lead in heavy lapped traffic two laps later. With several lapped cars ahead of them, Mark tried to take the lead with a high move. But Steve quickly steered his #11 into the low groove to maintain the lead. A similar scenario brought the crowd to its feet late in the final lap as Mark made one last attempt to steal the $7,000 from his cousin. Taking the high line around a pack of backmarkers, Mark raced wheel-to-wheel with Steve through turn four. "The King of the Outlaws" stayed in the low groove, then headed straight for the flagstand to secure the breathtaking victory. "I saw the white flag and I knew if I followed the lapped car, Mark would drive around me in the middle," Steve explained. "So I stayed in the middle and slid up to take the track away from Mark. Then I saw the checkered flag and quit holding my breath." Each of the first four Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main events has been won by a different driver. Haudenschild held off Blaney for third place. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Lasoski, 14th-starting Andy Hillenburg, Sammy Swindell, Paul McMahan, Gary Wright and Donny Schatz. "The Wild Child," the fastest of 10 drivers breaking the one- lap record Mark Kinser set last March, circled the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval in 14.191 seconds. Garry Brazier, making his debut in the #75 Mopar Stealth, qualified fifth-quick, finished third in the "B" Feature and 12th in the main event.
