MARK KINSER WINS ORANGE COUNTY EVENT, LOSES BET By Richard Day MIDDLETOWN, NY (June 5) - There's little danger of the World of Outlaws losing Mark Kinser to a career as a sports forecaster ... not as long as the series races at Orange County Fair Speedway. Just like clockwork, Kinser won the third World of Outlaws "A" Feature of his career at Orange County Sunday night when the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout opened its annual four-race tour of New York state. Mark has won at Orange County Fair Speedway every four years, his first in 1986 and his second in 1990. "I'm happy I won the race, but I'm sorry I lost a bet (on the Indiana Pacers-New York Knicks NBA Eastern Conference playoffs) with (Dave) Blaney," Mark told the capacity crowd from victory lane. Kinser opened the $32,325 event just as it ended for him - on top. He earned his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award in three nights with a 17.812- second (126.319-m.p.h.) qualifying lap around the semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval. After finishing third in the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race, he picked the #0 inversion pill, giving him the pole position in the Vivarin Dash. He won the five-lap race for the right to start the main event inside the front row. Mark drove the #5M Maxim into the lead immediately after the green flag fell, and entered lapped traffic with a three-car-length advantage four laps into the 25-lap race. Steve Kinser, Mark's second cousin and winner of the World of Outlaws' last two "A" Features at Orange County, caught the leader amid a crowd of backmarkers in turn one early in the sixth lap. The #11 Valvoline Maxim pushed as Kinser exited the second corner, however, allowing Mark to drive away from him on the back stretch. Mark cut through lapped traffic like it was warm butter, and opened a 10-car-length advantage within five laps. But Steve narrowed the gap to two car-lengths during the 11th lap when Mark slowed behind a group of lapped cars. A 12th-lap caution for Ken Hyatt's flat left rear tire tightend the field even more. When the race resumed, Kenny Jacobs drove the #71M Ecowater Stealth past Andy Hillenburg in the third corner to take over fourth place. Jacobs raced wheel-to-wheel with Blaney while Hillenburg battled Sammy Swindell for two laps. Then, with nine laps remaining, Jacobs took third place from "The Buckeye Bullet" deep in the fourth corner while Sammy raced past Hillenburg for fifth. Mark was eight car-lengths ahead of Steve when he caught the backmarkers again during the 17th lap. He slowed behind Sid Blandford four laps later, allowing Steve and Jacobs to catch him. After following Blandford for a lap, Mark broke free and padded his cushion. He took the checkered flag 10 car-lengths ahead of Steve. "The car worked real well all night," Mark said. "Drawing the #0 (inversion pill) let me start up front. As long as I didn't make any mistakes, it was my race to win." Blaney claimed third place with a last-lap pass of Jacobs. Sammy finished the main event in fifth place, ahead of Jac Haudenschild, Hillenburg and Two Winners Racing teammates Greg Hodnett, Joe Gaerte and Jeff Swindell. A side panel on the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim's top wing blew off during time trials, causing Jeff to qualifying almost two seconds off Kinser's pace. He made up for the misfortune in the "A" Feature, however, racing past 11 sprinters from his 11th-row starting position. The eighth, ninth and 10th-place finishes for Hodnett, Gaerte and Swindell marked the fourth time this season the Two Winners Racing teammates have all finished in the top 10 in the same race.
