WRIGHT BEDEVILS WORLD OF OUTLAWS IN SPRING NATIONALS FINALE By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (March 18) - Warning! Fans trying to predict winners at Devil's Bowl Speedway shouldn't bet against the owner, Lanny Edwards. "If you want to bet on somebody, put your money on Gary Wright," Edwards told announcer Jack Miller before the 22nd Annual Spring Nationals' championship feature took the green flag Saturday night. Wright must have made quite an impression on Edwards when he won sprint car and modified championships at the Devil's Bowl during the 1980s. He was even more impressive Saturday, passing outside polesitter Danny Lasoski late in the seventh lap and holding off hard-charging Jac Haudenschild to claim the $9,000 first prize. The victory was Wright's second in World of Outlaws competition at the Devil's Bowl. He also won at Mesquite's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval on July 31, 1993. "This is my home track," Wright told the capacity crowd from victory lane. "All my sponsors and fans are here. If you're going to win one, this is the place to do it." Wright, who set quick-time with a 14.364-second qualifying lap, won the first heat race and earned the right to start the main event outside the second row by finishing fourth in the Snap-on Tools Dash. While Lasoski steered the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim around polesitter Mark Kinser as the green flag fell, Wright raced past Tommie Estes, Jr., to take over third place. Wright was challenging Kinser for the runner-up spot two laps later when "B" Feature winner Shane Stewart tangled with Frankie Kerr and stopped in the fourth corner. As the green flag replaced the yellow, Estes spun into the infield in turn one. Wright roared into the runner-up spot late in the fourth lap and took the lead with a low move into the second corner three laps later. He entered lapped traffic midway through lap nine. Jeff Swindell, who restarted at the back of the pack after having his right rear tire changed during the third-lap caution period, was a major obstacle for Wright in lapped traffic between the 10th and 15th laps. Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past Kinser at the flag- stand for third place midway through the race, and inherited the runner-up spot when "The Dude" stopped in turn two with a blown engine the next time around. With Jeff Shepard, Swindell and Lance Blevins providing a buffer between him and "The Wild Child," Wright quickly opened a half-straightaway advantage within a lap after the race resumed. Dave Blaney raced past Haudenschild on the restart, only to have the move nullified when a back-straightaway collision involving Joe Gaerte, Johnny Herrera and Lee Dunn brought out the caution flag before a lap was completed. As "The Wild Child" crowded Wright on the restart, Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim past "The Buckeye Bullet" in turn one to regain third place. Wright caught the backmarkers again with a half-straightaway lead during the 23rd lap. "The Wild Child" made several runs at him during the final seven laps, but Wright had the #9 Action Rent-to-Own Schnee two seconds ahead as the checkered flag fell. "The track was nice tonight; it was really racy," Haudenschild said. "Gary really runs well here, and we just couldn't catch him. He was just a little faster than us." Wright also praised the Devil's Bowl's racing surface. "I like the track the way it was tonight," Wright said in victory lane. "It was a little slick in the middle; that way you can run the top or the bottom. To me, that's the perfect race track." Kinser held off "The Buckeye Bullet" to finish in third place. Rounding out the top 10 were Aaron Berryhill, Greg Hodnett, Sammy Swindell, Andy Hillenburg, Mike Peters and Terry McCarl. Hodnett drove the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim past six cars from his sixth-row starting position to win the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award.
