SMITH WINS MEMPHIS MAIN, HIS SECOND VICTORY IN FIVE EVENTS By Richard Day MEMPHIS, TN (June 17) - While Dave Blaney and Jac Haudenschild play leap-frog atop the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, Stevie Smith is steadily maneuvering his way into striking distance. The World of Outlaws' 1990 Rookie of the Year roared to his second "A" Feature victory in the last five events Saturday before a near-capacity crowd at Memphis Motorsports Park, leading all 30 laps. Smith, the sixth-fastest qualifier, received the luxury of starting the Vivarin Dash on the pole when Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser picked the #6 inversion pill. Stevie wasted little time earning the pole position in the "A" Feature by beating the Kinser cousins - Steve and Mark - Jeff Swindell, Blaney, Mike Ward, Andy Hillenburg and Randy Hannagan across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Stevie burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and entered lapped traffic with a three-car-length advantage two laps later. The field was tightened during the eighth lap when Sammy Swindell stopped his #1 Hooters Gambler in turn two with a flat right rear tire. Ironically, the flat tire ended the two-time World of Outlaws champion's frustration. Engine problems caused Sammy to qualify a disappointing 19th- quick, and he dropped out of the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race to fine tune the car even more. He earned his first Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for racing into 10th place from the back of the pack in the final 22 laps. Stevie opened a three-car-length lead within a lap after the green flag replaced the yellow, but was unable to shake Steve Kinser. Steve caught Smith in heavy lapped traffic early in the 12th lap. But with a quick move around Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Tim Engler in turn three, Stevie returned to his comfort zone. Haudenschild regained first place in the Skoal Outlaws Series point standings Friday when a flat tire caused Blaney to finish 14th at Tri-City Speedway. "The Buckeye Bullet" surged back into the lead Saturday as "The Wild Child" coasted off the track with a blown engine midway through the race. Blaney's fifth-place finish gave him a 14-point lead entering Sunday's Bud Carson Memorial at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. Mark Kinser was battling his cousin for the runner-up spot when Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Kevin Huntley brought out the caution flag late in the 21st lap, stopping in the second corner with a blown engine. Engler provided a buffer between Smith and Kinser when the race resumed, enabling Stevie to cruise to his third victory of the year. Kinser passed Engler quickly, but was unable to challenge Smith for the lead during the final nine laps. "The car was perfect," Smith yelled to his crew as he jumped out of the #71M Ecowater Maxim in victory lane. Mark Kinser held off hard-charging Jeff Swindell for third place. Rounding out the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 30th event of the year were Blaney, Hillenburg, 14th-starting Joe Gaerte, Greg Hodnett, First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Danny Lasoski and Sammy. Mark received his 10th Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year after circling Memphis' semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval in 13.417 seconds, an average speed of 100.619 m.p.h.
