JEFF SWINDELL TURNS MAGICIAN AT MAGIC CITY By Richard Day BILLINGS, MT (August 23) - The old black magic has returned to the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim. Scott Benic and the Two Winners Racing team aren't doing it with mirrors, either. They started from scratch eight events ago and Jeff Swindell hasn't finished out of the top 10 since. Swindell followed his runner-up finish in the Knoxville Nationals with his third "A" Feature victory of the year Tuesday when the World of Outlaws opened its inaugural Wild Wild Northwest Tour before a standing-room-only crowd at Magic City Speedway. "We had been in a slump," Swindell admitted, "but since we put the new car together we've been running like we did at the first of the year." Swindell won the fourth World of Outlaws "A" Feature of the year - at Battleground Speedway - to take the lead in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings. Lately, he has been battling his brother, Sammy, for fourth place. Sammy got Magic City's first World of Outlaws event off to a fast start when he set the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval's one-lap record with a 12.267-second (110.051-m.p.h.) qualifying run. The effort earned the driver of Jeff Gilliam's #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins his ninth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the season. Dave Blaney beat Jeff across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 30-lap "A" Feature on the pole. Swindell raced around "The Buckeye Bullet" when the green flag fell in the main event. But the red flag replaced the green before the first lap was completed, however, when a third-corner collision sent Sid Blandford flipping. When the race resumed, Jeff steered the #7TW to the rim in turn four to the take the lead again. The green flag waved for 1 1/2 laps before Steve Beitler and Keith Kauffman tangled in turn three. Beitler's #21 American Challenger, which is sponsored by the next track on the World of Outlaws' schedule - Skagit Speedway - suffered front-end damage and was towed into the pits. At the same time, Stevie Smith lost fifth place when he allowed the #12x Beaver Drill & Tool Gambler to hit the outside retaining wall and flipped on the back straightaway. Sammy won a back-straightaway drag race with Blaney to take over the runner-up spot immediately after the race resumed, only to have "The Buckeye Bullet" return the favor in the fourth corner. Jeff, keeping the #7TW against the cushion, entered lapped traffic with a five-car-length advantage during the fifth lap. Three laps later, he broke through the dense traffic to increase his advantage to eight car- lengths. Midway through the race, as Jeff approached Craig Smith and "B" Feature winner Greg DeCaires, Blaney, Sammy and Nationals champion Steve Kinser narrowed the gap to make it a four-car-battle for the lead. Kinser took the low line through the second corner to pass Sammy for third place early in lap 16, and Blaney took the lead the next time around by threading the #10 Vivarin J&J between Jeff and Shawna Wilskey entering turn one. Jeff regained the lead with a low move into the third corner two laps later. Seven laps remained when Kinser passed Blaney in the fourth corner and caught Jeff entering turn one. The three raced three-abreast into the first corner - Jeff on the inside, Blaney in the middle and Kinser on the outside - when the #11 Valvoline Maxim's right rear tire clipped the retaining wall. The impact turned the #11 around and shot it into the air, breaking its front end. Jeff burst into the lead again when the green flag replaced the red. Jac Haudenschild and Andy Hillenburg relegated Sammy to fifth place during the 25th and 27th laps, respectively, before George Graham spun to a stop in the second corner, setting up a two-lap dash for the checkered flag. As the green flag replaced the yellow, Swindell took the low line while Blaney took the high road into turn three. The leaders raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway, but Jeff took the high line away from "The Buckeye Bullet" as they entered the first corner. He beat Blaney under the checkered flag by a car-length. "The track was really nice tonight," Swindell said in victory lane. "There were two good grooves, and possibly a third. "I heard Dave on the restart, and I got a good look at him, too." Rounding out the top 10 in the main event were Hillenburg, Sammy, Gaerte, "The Wild Child," Kenny Jacobs, Greg Hodnett, 23rd-starting Steve Kent and Johnny Herrera.
