MARK KINSER IMPRESSES SPONSOR WITH SECOND STRAIGHT VICTORY By Richard Day WEST LEBANON, NY (June 6) - Mark Kinser sure knows how to woo a prospective sponsor. With representatives from the Wirtgen Corporation attending the World of Outlaws' event at Lebanon Valley Speedway Monday, he impressed them by winning his second consecutive "A" Feature. Winning at Orange County Sunday and Lebanon Valley Monday marked the first time in Mark's 11-year career that he has captured two Copenhagen- Skoal Shootout main events in a row. Mark, whose three-year-old one-lap record was broken by Andy Hillenburg, was the fifth-fastest qualifier and followed Kenny Jacobs and second cousin Steve Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Mark started the "A" Feature inside the second row, but was passed by the Swindell brothers - Sammy and Jeff - during the opening lap. Kenny Jacobs, who won the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the main event on the pole, drove the #71M Ecowater Stealth into the lead immediately after the green flag fell. Sammy passed outside polesitter Steve Kinser for the runner-up spot deep in turn two and set his sights on the leader. Debris on the racing surface brought out the caution flag during the second lap. When the green flag replaced the yellow, Sammy threaded the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins between Jacobs and the berm in the third corner to take the lead. While Sammy quickly opened a four-car-length advantage, Steve and Jacobs - wrestlers during their high school days - grappled for second place. Sammy entered lapped traffic five laps into the race, but was reeled in by Steve and Jacobs when he slowed behind Johnny Bridge the next time around. Swindell maneuvered around Bridge midway through lap seven, and quickly padded his cushion to eight car-lengths. Mark started making his way toward the front midway through the race by steering the #5M Maxim into the high groove. He rode the rim around Jeff Swindell for fourth place during the 14th lap. He raced around Steve in turn two for third place three laps later, and executed the same move for the runner-up spot the next time around as Jacobs followed Joey Kuhn, "B" Feature winner Chuck Roan and Rob Hart in the low groove. Sammy, 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when Mark took over second place, lost his advantage within two laps. He maintained the lead for two more laps before Mark pulled off his third second-corner pass in six laps - this one for first place. There was no stopping Mark after he took the lead. He was 10 car- lengths ahead of Sammy when he took the checkered flag. "I'm really happy to win here," Mark told the near-capacity crowd, which ignored threatening weather to attend the 14th running of the World of Outlaws at West Lebanon's high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. "It's usually hard to pass on this track. I dropped back to fifth place on the start, but I found a line nobody else was running and managed to get to the front. The car worked great." The $5,200 victory, the first of Mark's career at Lebanon Valley, was his third of the year. He won his third main event of the 1993 season on June 9th, en route to a five-victory campaign. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Jacobs, Steve Kinser, Jeff Swindell, Jac Haudenschild, Hillenburg, First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Dave Blaney, Craig Keel of Weedsport, NY, and Billy Pauch. Hillenburg's 18.029-second (99.839-m.p.h.) qualifying lap trimmed .006 seconds off the previous one-lap record. The effort earned Andy his seventh Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year. Sid Blandford, gunning for 1994 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year honors, collided with "The Wild Child" during the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race and crashed into the back-straightaway retaining wall. He drove his #31 B&B Construction American Challenger into fifth place in the "B" Feature, but was unable to start the main event.
