Kinser Wins Knoxville Feature; Blaney Regains Points Lead By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 19) - World of Outlaws racers consider their July visit to Knoxville Raceway as one of the most important events of the year. With the Knoxville Nationals only a month away, the event gives them one final opportunity to test the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Ten-time Nationals champion Steve Kinser made the most of Wednesday night's single-program event, setting quick-time and winning the "A" Feature while experimenting with tires. A crash in the first heat race that took the life of Danny Young marred an otherwise fast and clean event. (see related story). Kinser's 15.952-second qualifying lap, the fastest in the 45-car field, earned him his sixth EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year. He earned the outside pole position in the 25-lap "A" Feature by following Andy Hillenburg across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Hillenburg took the lead from the pole and Jeff Swindell raced past Dave Blaney and his brother, Sammy, to take over third place as the green flag fell in the main event. Blaney regained the third spot by steering the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into the first corner the next time around. World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidate Randy Hannagan brought out the caution flag early in the third lap when he allowed his #1x sprinter to spin to a stop in turn four. As the race resumed, Jac Haudenschild suffered a blown engine and stopped on the front straightaway. Unable to return to the race, "The Wild Child" was credited with a 24th-place finish. He fell two points behind Blaney in their battle for the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series points race when "The Buckeye Bullet" finished third in the "A" Feature. Feeling the pressure to retain the lead on the ensuing restart, Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J hard into turn three. He turned sideways, however, allowing Kinser and Blaney to pass him in the high groove. Swindell relegated Hillenburg to fourth place with a low move in turn two a lap later. Kinser had his #11 Quaker State Maxim 10 car-lengths ahead of the field by the seventh lap, and caught the backmarkers the next time around. Blaney narrowed Kinser's advantage to two car-lengths in lapped traffic during the ninth lap, and Swindell made it a three-car-race for the lead early lap 10. But as quickly as "The Buckeye Bullet" and Jeff caught him, Kinser returned to his 10-car-length comfort zone with a move around a pack of backmarkers by the time he crossed the finish line. Seconds later, Swindell drove the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim back into the runner-up spot. He was gaining on Kinser when his Two Winners Racing teammate, Greg Hodnett, stopped on the front straightaway with a broken rear end. Kinser was racing away from the field again two laps later when Sammy Swindell's #1 Hooters Gambler suffered a blown engine, forcing him to stop on the front stretch. Within three laps after the race resumed, "The King of the Outlaws" was 15 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers. He entered lapped traffic again during the 19th lap. Racing around traffic in the high groove enabled Jeff to narrow the gap to six car-lengths with three laps remaining. Kinser nursed his tires during the final two laps, but was still eight car-lengths ahead of Swindell when he took the checkered flag. "I didn't really need a long green-flag run," Kinser said in victory lane. "We were running a tire that was probably a little too soft. We were hoping to learn something for a race that's coming up in a few weeks. "We were strong in the first half of the race, but we started getting loose the last few laps." Blaney held off Hillenburg to finish the "A" Feature in third place. Danny Lasoski's first outing the #77 Cornwell Tools J&J saw him win the "B" Feature and finish fifth in the main event. Keith Kauffman, who replaced Lasoski in the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim, was right behind in sixth place. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera, Stevie Smith, Terry McCarl and Craig Dollansky. Jerry Richert, Jr., earned his second Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award in as many Knoxville events by racing into 12th place from the 11th row.
