Kinser Earns Pole as Wright, Jackson Win Twice By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (August 15) - Gary Wright won the First Heat Race and the "A" Feature while Skip Jackson captured the Kele & Associates American/Australian Challenge and the B Scramble. A seventh-place finish by Mark Kinser in the A Scramble meant much more, however, in Friday's Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Pole Scramble/Non-Qualifiers' Program at the 37th Annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals. The action was televised live on The Nashville Network's TNN Motor Madness show. Kinser, the defending Nationals champion, was a little off in the 12-lap scramble race, but still managed to score enough points to earn the pole position in Saturday's championship feature. "It's real important," Kinser said of starting up front. "It may not be quite the advantage it was in the pole scramble because we'll be working lapped traffic. It's easier to keep them behind you, but still it's going to be a great race." Dave Blaney, who earlier in the day announced a three-year sponsorship commitment with Amoco, won the A Scramble. He moved from 10th to seventh in the starting lineup, while Sammy Swindell, who almost collided with Mark early in the race, jumped from ninth to fifth by finishing in fifth place. Johnny Herrera's second-place finish gave him the third row inside starting position next to Second Preliminary Feature winner Jac Haudenschild. Joe Gaerte finished third to claim the fourth row outside starting position in Saturday's championship feature. A fourth-place finish in the A Scramble pushed Greg Hodnett into the second row outside starting position. Steve Kinser, the 11-time Nationals champion, suffered a blown engine during the first lap of the A Scramble. His 10th- place finish dropped him back to the outside of the fifth row. "We just broke a rod," Kinser said. "It happens once in a while. We've been fortunate not to have that happen much. We'll just have to put another one in. The car felt pretty good. It better be awful good as far back as we're going to be starting." Wright's double-play served as redemption for his past disappointments at the Nationals. "We've been so bad here for so long, we changed from one end to the other," Wright said. "With a little help from some guys here, we finally got pretty close." Wright's "A" Feature victory gave him the 11th starting position in Saturday's "C" Feature. He exchanged the lead with polesitter and early leader Rick Ziehl before taking over first place during lap 11. He out-raced Leonard Lee, a first-time winner at Knoxville Raceway three weeks ago, for the $3,000 victory. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year candidate Donny Schatz appeared to turn his luck around Friday, racing into fifth place from deep in the field in the "A" Feature. After he and his crew spent Thursday and Friday rebuilding the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler, they changed the engine in 20 minutes during the "C" Feature. Schatz had plenty of power early, passing six cars during the first three laps. He passed three more on lap four and two more during the 10th lap before claiming fifth place with a first- corner pass of Kelly Kinser with three laps remaining. Jackson started on the pole and led all 10 laps of the Kele & Associates' international challenge race while his "mates" battled the Americans behind him. His victory in the B Scramble gave him the second row outside starting position in Saturday's "B" Feature. "We were a little bit down and out the other night, but we changed things around a little bit," Jackson said. "Now we're going pretty good." Jeff Swindell raced into second place from the back of the pack in the B Scramble, but was never to able to catch Jackson. Ed Lynch, Jr., earned the right to start Saturday's "C" Feature on the pole by roaring through the field from the back of the pack to win the C Scramble.
