Swindell Takes Ethanol Classic Opener By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 4) - Sammy Swindell took a big step toward putting a series of misfortunes behind him Friday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the Second Annual Iowa Ethanol Classic at Knoxville Raceway. The leader in the series' Driver Point Standings led all 20 laps in the evening's main event for his fifth Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "We had a good race car last night (at Huset's Speedway)," Swindell said. "We should have finished first or second over there, but we had a problem with a part in the front end and it put us behind the whole night. "If we can get rid of the little bit of bad luck we've had for the last month or so, we'll be OK. It's not like we're having trouble and not running good. With all this behind us, we should finish with a good season." If Swindell's luck improves and the #1 Channellock Gambler continues to perform as it has the first half of the season, Sammy could win his third World of Outlaws championship. Defending series champion Mark Kinser received his 16th Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year after pacing the qualifying session with a 15.483-second, 116.257-m.p.h. lap. He picked the #6 inversion pill, putting Swindell on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. Sammy won the five-lap race for the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the feature. Jac Haudenschild passed Steve Kinser and seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski quickly, and was in second place by the end of the first lap. Sammy opened a half-straightaway advantage during the first three laps as Kinser battled "The Wild Child" for the runner-up spot. Swindell entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Fourth Heat Race winner Dave Blaney passed "The Dude" for fourth, then steered his #10 Vivarin J&J deep into turn three to pass Kinser for third place late in lap eight. "The King of the Outlaws" regained the spot the next time around with a high move through the first and second corners. Swindell, a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers midway through the race, increased his advantage to almost a full straightaway during the 12th lap. Stevie Smith, who started outside the fourth row, joined Kinser and Blaney in their battle for third place with seven laps remaining. Three laps later, Smith steered his #19 into the low groove between turns three and four to pass Blaney for fourth. He executed an inside move in the second corner to pass Kinser for third place the next time around. Swindell was 14 car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild and lapped up to 14th place when he took the checkered flag. "The track was really wide tonight," Swindell said. "There there were a lot of places to get around lapped traffic, but the fastest ways around were right on the top or right on the bottom. "I could definitely go faster in (turns) one and two than in three and four. As a matter of fact, a couple of lapped cars beat me off four, so I wasn't sure where to run down there. "The only problem I had with lapped traffic was when guys decided to change their line. It's tough when you commit to go around a guy really close and he changes his line. As long as the lapped cars are pretty consistent, we can work our way through them." Looking forward to Saturday's Iowa Ethanol Classic finale, Sammy said, "We'll just have to have the car a little better prepared, but it's nothing we haven't done before. As long as we keep a good eye on our maintenance, we should be in good shape." Smith and Kinser finished third and fourth, respectively, to claim the other two automatic starting positions in Saturday's Vivarin Dash. Blaney held off Greg Hodnett for fifth place. Completing the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Mark Kinser and Andy Hillenburg, 13th-starting Johnny Herrera and Lasoski. Less than 3 1/2 seconds separated the 50 fastest qualifiers in the 51-car field.
