Lasoski Completes Iowa Ethanol Classic Sweep By Richard Day

KNOXVILLE, IA (July 3) - Defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion Danny Lasoski added the Iowa Ethanol Classic to his list of prestigious victories at Knoxville Raceway Saturday. "The Dude" competed his sweep of the event by passing Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser in turn four late in the 22nd lap and taking the checkered flag with 2.4 seconds to spare. The double-feature sweep was Lasoski's second of the season. He also swept the rain-delayed Spring Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway in April. "The Dude" has won six "A" Features this season. He is tied with Rick Ferkel for 12th place on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' career victory list with 18. Johnny Herrera, who finished 19th in the first race, won the Iowa Ethanol Classic's traditional bonus feature. The cars started the bonus race in inverted order from how they finished the championship race. The former Knoxville Raceway champions each received $12,000 for their victories. Kinser beat Lasoski across the finish line in the Channellock Dash for the right to start the first 25-lap feature on the pole. He drove the #5M Mopar Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell and was .4 seconds ahead of "The Dude" when he entered lapped traffic six laps later. Mark rode the rim around the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval early, then dropped into the low groove midway through the race. Lasoski narrowed the gap to .3 seconds by lap 14, and almost took the lead when Mark slid out of the low groove between the third and fourth corners three laps later. Kinser opened a one-second advantage when he raced around a pack of backmarkers during the 20th lap, only to have Lasoski catch him again two laps later. "The Dude" steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove in turn four and clipped the #5M as he executed the winning pass. Lasoski finished the caution-free race in 7:42.35. Defending Iowa Ethanol Classic champion Jac Haudenschild finished third, ahead of Steve Kinser, Tyler Walker, Tim Shaffer, Stevie Smith, Vivarin Fast-Time award winner Daryn Pittman, Knoxville Raceway point standings leader Terry McCarl and Kevin Gobrecht. Pittman received the first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his career for pacing the 45-car qualifying session with a 15.606-second, 115.340-m.p.h., lap. Lance Blevins was in fourth place in the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race when a broken U-joint caused a drive line malfunction in the #21 PC Joey J&J. Blevins suffered an injured left ankle, which kept him from racing for the remainder of the program. Polesitter Larry Pinegar II burst into the lead as the green flag fell. Herrera, who started inside the second row, passed Randy Anderson on the front straightaway, then steered the #1BK Networks Eagle into the low groove in turn three to pass Pinegar for the lead. Pinegar slowed on the front stretch two laps later. He tried to keep the #11L out of traffic in the high groove, but Tyler Walker collided with him, sending the #35 Air Sep Maxim flipping. Although the drivers were uninjured, their cars were unable to continue racing. Lasoski's crew changed both of his rear tires during the red period, and he restarted in 19th place. Craig Dollansky, a former Knoxville Raceway regular, tried to pass Herrera for the lead as the green flag replaced the red, but was unable to surge ahead. Herrera opened a 3.2-second advantage within three laps, and was 4.7 seconds ahead when he entered lapped traffic during the 10th lap. Jeff Swindell surrendered third place when the left rear tire on the #104+ Octane Boost J&J lost air pressure the next time around. Sammy Swindell took third place from Brooke Tatnell two laps after the race resumed. Steve Kinser, Andy Hillenburg and Gobrecht raced three-abreast through the second corner as they battled for fifth place one lap later. Gobrecht took the position, then drove the #93 Amoco J&J past Tatnell low in turn two early in the 15th lap. Mark Kinser, who raced into sixth place from outside the 10th row during the first 16 laps, passed Tatnell for fifth late in lap 18. He took the high line through the second corner to pass Gobrecht for fourth place three laps later. Swindell executed a last-lap pass of Dollansky in turn two to claim the runner-up spot, but was 2.7 seconds behind when Herrera took the checkered flag. Dollansky held off Mark Kinser for third place. Steve Kinser finished fifth, ahead of Gobrecht, Lasoski, McCarl, Hillenburg and Tatnell. Donny Schatz was the Iowa Ethanol Classic's most consistent driver, finishing 11th in both feature races. WoO
