KINSER COMPLETES SWEEP OF VALVOLINE CLASSIC By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (June 25) - The Third Annual Valvoline Classic will go down in history like a heavyweight title boxing bout: 13-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser against Knoxville Raceway's five-time titlist, Danny Lasoski, in two 25-lap rounds. While the partisan Knoxville Raceway faithful will be content to call the event a draw, Team Valvoline's Kinser did what he had to do. He won the first feature race - the one that counts in the World of Outlaws point standings. With the field inverted in the second race, "The Dude" came back to claim the $8,200 first prize. "The King of the Outlaws," winner of Friday's Preliminary Feature, won the Snap-on Tools Dash for the right to start the first "A" Feature from the pole. He took the lead immediately after the green flag was thrown in the opening feature race. Lasoski passed Jeff Swindell for the runner-up spot while Dave Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J into the inside line on the front straightaway, passing nine sprinters to move into sixth place during the first lap. The race came to an abrupt halt early in the second lap when Ray Lipsey allowed his #45 Speedway Motors Schnee to spin between turns one and two. Unable to dodge the spinning car, Stevie Smith collided with Lipsey, which turned the #12x Beaver Drill & Tool Gambler on its side. Stevie's new ride received only a bent top wing in the collision, but he was unable to return to the race until the caution flag was thrown nine laps later. Kinser was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers by lap four, and entered lapped traffic the next time around. "The Dude" reeled in the leader in lapped traffic, and drove the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim past Kinser for the lead in turn three late in the 10th lap. But before Lasoski could reach the finish line, Randy Smith hit the second-corner retaining wall, bringing out the caution flag and negating his pass for the lead. Skip Jackson restarted between "The King of the Outlaws" and Lasoski when the green flag replaced the yellow. Kinser caught the backmarkers again during the 15th lap, and Lasoski narrowed the gap within four laps. Lasoski passed Kinser for the lead deep in the second corner with four laps remaining, only to have "The King of the Outlaws" regain first place in turn four the next time around. Jackson and Joe Gaerte brought out the caution flag by spinning in turn two early in the 24th lap, setting up a two-lap dash for the checkered flag. Kinser got the jump on "The Dude" when the race resumed, and was five car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag. "The #11 Valvoline Maxim felt good, but I didn't feel like I got through traffic that well," Kinser said in victory lane. "Danny was fast. I knew he was back there, and that he would be coming strong." Lasoski had nothing but praise for Kinser after the first race: "When you pass Steve Kinser once, you'd better make it stick. It's not very often you're going to get a second shot at him. I got by Steve, but he got back by me in the next lap, and I didn't get another chance to pass him." Rounding out the top 10 in the first feature race were Sammy Swindell, 13th-starting Greg Hodnett, Jeff Swindell, Andy Hillenburg, Mark Kinser, Blaney, Bobby Davis, Jr., and Jeff Shepard. Hodnett steered the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim to the rim in turn one to pass Jeff, his Two Winners Racing teammate, Hillenburg and Mark Kinser early in the final lap to finish fourth. Kinser and "The Dude" started the second feature race side-by-side on the 11th row. Stevie Smith took the lead from the pole, but Ryan Jamison brought the crowd to its feet with a fourth-corner pass for the lead late in the second lap. While Jamison opened a half-straightaway advantage within seven laps, Lasoski and "The King of the Outlaws" roared into third and fifth place, respectively. Lasoski passed Smith for the runner-up spot early in lap 11, and out- dragged Jamison down the back straightaway to take the lead midway through the race. "The Dude" was a full straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when Kinser passed Jamison for second with seven laps remaining, and was 10 car- lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag. "I got off to a good start in the second race, and was able to work my way through traffic," Lasoski said. "I knew I couldn't relax with Steve back there. "I wanted to get Gil (his car owner, Sonner) and Mr. (Don, owner of Casey's General Stores) Lamberte a World of Outlaws victory. It's great to get one here at home."
