Sammy Swindell Wins Tire War at I-96 By Richard Day LAKE ODESSA, MI (July 22) - The immense knowledge Sammy Swindell has gained from helping Goodyear develop its Eagle Dirt Track Eagle tires paid off in a big way at I-96 Speedway Monday. While almost one-third of the 24-car field changed tires, the 1981-1982 Skoal Outlaw Series champion held off the challenges of the Kinser cousins - Steve and Mark - to claim the $6,000 first prize. The victory, Swindell's sixth of the year, pushed him into fifth place in the World of Outlaws point standings. "With more experience, you get to know the tracks - how different conditions affect the racing surface," Swindell said. "It's a big guessing game, and the experience factor really comes into play. You know if you have certain conditions, then the track is going to be a certain way later on." Mark received his 24th EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session. His 15.571-second lap was only .035 seconds off the one-lap record Stevie Smith set last July 24th. He also won the First Quaker State Heat Race. Swindell, who was .198 seconds off Mark's blistering pace, started next to the World of Outlaws points leader in the Vivarin Dash and won the five-lap race for the right to start the main event on the pole. Sammy drove his #1 ChannelLock Gambler into the lead as the green flag fell in the 30-lap "A" Feature. Mark kept pace with him throughout the first lap, and took the lead with a low move into turn two the next time around. Dave Blaney, who fell behind Andy Hillenburg during the opening lap, took the high line around Andy and raced wheel-to- wheel with Smith only to drop back into sixth place by the end of lap three. "The Buckeye Bullet" passed Hillenburg again as Steve Kinser battled Swindell for the runner-up spot one lap later. Mark entered lapped traffic with a 20-car-length advantage early in lap six. Swindell narrowed the gap to five car-lengths within a lap, and caught him in turn one early in the 10th lap. Then, as Mark took the high line around "B" Feature winner Bobby Allen, Sammy passed both with a low move through the second corner. Blaney drove the #10 Vivarin J&J into third place during the 11th and 12th laps, only to have Smith and Steve Kinser relegate him to fifth the next time around. With the racing surface starting to take rubber, the low groove became the line of choice around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Fearing he would lose traction - and possibly first place - Swindell was content to chase Allen around the inside groove. Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim next to Sammy in the third corner with 11 laps remaining, but was unable to regain the lead. Steve caught his cousin early in lap 21, and took over second place the next time around as Mark lost traction as he tried to pass Swindell for the lead in turn four. Frankie Kerr and Greg Hodnett stopped with flat right rear tires with eight laps remaining. Two laps later, Third Quaker State Heat Race winner Joey Saldana and Daniel Coggeshell collided while Hodnett and Joe Gaerte spun to avoid them in the first corner. Tim Shaffer's flat right rear tire brought out the caution flag again, allowing Saldana's crew to change a torsion bar on the #75 Mopar Maxim so he could restart the race. The leaders caught the backmarkers as Smith stopped with a flat right rear tire early in lap 27. Blaney, Hillenburg and Jac Haudenschild also replaced right rear rubber, and restarted the race at the back. Swindell raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the red, and took the checkered flag with five car-lengths to spare. Steve held off cousin Mark for second place. Completing the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 41st event of the year were 11th- starting Johnny Herrera, Lance Blevins, Second Quaker State Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell, Jeff Shepard, Hodnett, Van Gurley, Jr., and Allen.
