Kinser Wins at Huset's; Tightens Points Race By Richard Day
BRANDON, SD (May 3) - Mark Kinser cut Danny Lasoski's lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series standings to four points Monday when he led all 30 laps in the "A" Feature at Huset's Speedway. Ironically, Kinser lost the points lead the last time the series raced at Huset's.
A runner-up run in the Channellock Dash was all that kept Kinser from a perfect racing program. He received his sixth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the 30-car qualifying session. His 10.642-second, 126.856-m.p.h., lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval trimmed .103 seconds off the single-lap record Sammy Swindell set on April 27, 1997. Mark won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, then earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the front row by following Donny Schatz across the finish line in the Channellock Dash.
Kinser, who turns 35 Wednesday, won a front-straightaway drag race with Schatz to take the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. He was racing away from the field when Jeff Swindell took the #104+ Octane Boost J&J for a spin in turn one late in the second lap.
Terry McCarl, who fell behind Stevie Smith during the opening lap, regained third place by steering the #5 Wirtgen Maxim around Smith high in turn three within a lap after the race resumed.
Kinser held a .3-second advantage and was heading into lapped traffic when Brooke Tatnell flipped in the second corner in front of the leaders. McCarl made a run at Schatz low in turn two as the green flag replaced the red, but was unable to surge ahead.
Steve Kinser, whose third-place finish at Huset's pushed him into the points lead last July 7th, steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the lowest point between the third and fourth corners to pass Tyler Walker for fifth place late in lap nine.
Mark entered lapped traffic with a .8-second advantage three laps later.
Walker regained fifth place with an inside move in turn one midway through the race, then bicycled in the same spot the next time around to allow "The King of the Outlaws" to get back by him. Tyler lost three more positions early in the 17th lap when he drove his family's #35 Air Sep Maxim through the first corner on only two tires again.
Steve Kinser lost fourth place when he spun in turn four with 5 1/4 laps remaining.
Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into fourth place with a third-corner pass of Sammy Swindell late in lap 25. Walker came back the next time around, riding the rim through turns three and four to pass both Smith and Sammy.
Swindell was passing Kevin Gobrecht on the back stretch when they collided midway through the 27th lap. Steve Kinser was unable to dodge the #93 Amoco J&J and suffered a flat left rear tire. Kinser restarted at the back of the pack and raced into 12th place during the final three laps. A broken front end kept Gobrecht from restarting.
Schatz challenged Mark for the lead as the green flag replaced the yellow, but was .9 seconds behind when the #5M Mopar Maxim took the checkered flag. The victory was the fifth of Mark's career at Huset's Speedway.
McCarl held off Walker to finish in third place. Completing the top 10 were Smith, Swindell, former Huset's track champion Danny Lasoski, Jac Haudenschild, 14th-starting Johnny Herrera and Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky.
Jeff Swindell raced into 11th place from outside the 10th row.
The $42,100 event was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was postponed due to rain. A strong shower started within seconds after the checkered flag fell, preventing the announcers from interviewing Kinser.
Andy Hillenburg collided with Sammy Swindell and turned over during the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. After replacing the front end and engine in the #2 Luxaire J&J, he qualified for his 472nd consecutive main event by winning the "B" Feature. Hillenburg finished 17th in the "A" Feature.
The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has $42,100 events scheduled for I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE, Friday, and at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL, Sunday. WoO
