MARK KINSER ROARS IN HAGERSTOWN OPENER By Richard Day HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 27) - After spinning out of the lead in successive events, Mark Kinser was looking to reverse his team's fortunes when the World of Outlaws opened a double-feature event Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway. That's exactly what he did, breaking Hagerstown's one-lap record and leading all 20 laps for his fourth Preliminary Feature victory of the year. "We've had some bad luck racing through lapped traffic the last two events," Mark told the near-capacity crowd from victory lane. "Hopefully, this will turn things around for us." Mark trimmed .081 seconds off the previous one-lap record, rounding Hagerstown's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 18.812 seconds, to earn his eighth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year. He earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the front row by following Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Steve Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. The feature was delayed twice before the green flag flew for a full lap, however. Jeff Swindell surrendered his second-row starting position when he drove the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim into the pit area so his crew could fix a suspension problem. Then Jeff's Two Winners Racing teammate, Greg Hodnett, suffered a flat left rear tire when he collided with Dave Blaney on the original start. The Kinser cousins raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway within seconds after the green flag fell. Mark took the lead with a high move into the second corner and quickly opened a comfortable margin. He was eight car-lengths ahead of Steve within two laps, and was a half-straightaway ahead by the end of the third lap. As "The Buckeye Bullet" raced back through the field into seventh place, Mark entered lapped traffic during lap five. Mark still had a half-straightaway advantage when debris on the racing surface brought out the caution flag seven laps into the race. Within two laps after the race resumed, Mark put 10 car-lengths between him and his closest pursuers. He was 15 car-lengths ahead when he caught the backmarkers again during the 11th lap. With Skoal Outlaw Series point standings leader Jac Haudenschild challenging him for the runner-up spot, Steve caught Mark with seven laps remaining. Three laps later, Mark executed a quick move around two lapped cars in turn four to maintain the lead. Steve, relentless in his pursuit of the lead, reeled in Mark again within a lap. He passed Fred Rahmer, Swindell and Mark in the second corner to take the lead. A first-turn collision involving Blaney and Randy Hannagan brought out the caution flag before Steve completed the 17th lap, however, nullifying the move. The race resumed with Mark up front and Rahmer and Swindell ahead of Steve. Mark was unchallenged during the final three laps, and won with eight car-lengths to spare. "Dad (Karl Kinser, Mark's car owner and crew chief) did a great job of setting up the car," Mark said. "I'd like to thank him and my sponsors Wirtgen, Goodyear, Ray Williams and Maxim." "The Wild Child" and Andy Hillenburg earned the other two guaranteed starting positions in Sunday's Snap-on Tools Dash by finishing third and fourth, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were 13th-starting Stevie Smith, Danny Lasoski, Hodnett, Aaron Berryhill, Ed Lynch, Jr., and Blaney.
