'Buckeye Bullet' Wins Second Gold Cup Prelim By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 19) - Sprint car racing's big-money events have brought out the best in Dave Blaney this year. "The Buckeye Bullet" collected $100,000 paychecks on successive weekends in August, winning "The Historic Big One" and the Amoco Knoxville Nationals. Blaney laid the groundwork for his first Gold Cup Race of Champions title Friday, earning the right to start Saturday's main event on the pole by winning every race he entered in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' second preliminary program. "I think we have a pretty good shot Saturday," said Blaney, who also won a Preliminary Feature in the 1992 Gold Cup. "It will probably come down to who makes the least mistakes in traffic." Blaney, the third-fastest qualifier in the 44-car field, won the Third Heat Race from outside the third row, the Vivarin Dash from outside the front row and lapped up to 11th place during his Preliminary Feature victory. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove his #10 Vivarin J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the 25-lap feature, only to have Donny Schatz' second-corner spin bring out the caution flag. Stevie Smith, who started next to Blaney on the front row, took advantage on the ensuing restart, passing "The Buckeye Bullet" with a low move through turns one and two. "B" Feature winner David Fowler flipped in turn four, however, bringing out the red flag and forcing another complete restart. Blaney burst into the lead when the green flag replaced the red and raced into lapped traffic during lap five as Brent Kaeding challenged nine-time Gold Cup champion Steve Kinser for third place. Smith caught Blaney the next time around and pressured him for four laps before taking the lead with a low move through turns three and four late in the ninth lap. "The Buckeye Bullet" regained first place with a high move in the second corner two laps later. Blaney was racing away from the field during lap 14 when Greg Hodnett stopped in turn four. Schatz went to the work area for a new supply of tear-offs during the caution period, but was unable to make it back in time to take the green flag. Stephen Allard gave Schatz the opportunity he needed to rejoin the race with seconds after as the green flag fell, bringing out the caution flag with a first-corner spin. "The Buckeye Bullet" controlled the restart, but lost his comfortable advantage when Bud Kaeding collided with Craig Dollansky in turn four and spun late in the 16th lap. Brent Kaeding, Bud's father, executed an inside move in the fourth corner to pass Kinser for third place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Kaeding chased Smith for five laps before steering the #2M M&M Racing Maxim into the low groove between turns one and two to pass Smith for the runner-up spot. Kaeding narrowed the gap in lapped traffic during the final three laps, but was five car-lengths behind when Blaney took the checkered flag. "It was tough out there tonight," Blaney said. "The track was pretty rough, but it was wide enough that you could get by most of the lapped cars. Kenny (Woodruff, Blaney's crew chief) wanted to try something a little different here tonight, and he hit something that really worked for us. "I made a little mistake in traffic and Stevie got by me. But he got held up and I was able to get back by him. Actually, we were pretty even, but I knew our car was fast enough to win." Smith held off "The King of the Outlaws" for third place. Paul McMahan finished fifth, ahead of Steve Kent, 1996 Gold Cup champion Jeff Swindell, Sean Fenn, Peter Murphy and Jeff Young. Although Randy Hannagan - a Preliminary Feature winner in the 1993 Gold Cup Race of Champions - qualified eighth-quick, he failed to qualify for the evening's main event, finishing sixth in the Fourth Heat Race and the "B" Feature.
