JEFF SWINDELL SWEEPS TWIN-25S AT ROLLING WHEELS By Richard Day ELBRIDGE, NY (October 8) - Jeff Swindell wasn't as excited as some other World of Outlaws drivers were when Steve Kinser announced he would be racing on NASCAR's Winston Cup tour next year. "I wanted him to stay so I could beat him one year before he left," Jeff said. While he's losing his opportunity to beat Kinser for the World of Outlaws championship, Swindell did something no other driver has ever done Saturday at Rolling Wheels Raceway. He beat "The King of the Outlaws" twice in one night. Kinser became the first to win two features in one night at Knoxville Raceway on July 22, 1987. The Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout had a dual purpose for returning to Rolling Wheels' semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval following Saturday afternoon's Champion Spark Plugs Nationals: to complete its June 7th event and to run its regularly-scheduled racing program. Swindell, who finished fourth at Syracuse, drove the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim to victory from inside the second row in the postponed feature and led all 25 laps from the pole in the nightcap. "Our crew did a great job ... all the crews did," Swindell told the standing-room-only crowd from victory lane. "Running three races in one day is a lot for anybody. They had to change the setup from the mile to the 5/8-mile track, and the car was perfect all night." Jeff's brother, Sammy, won the June 7th Vivarin Dash for the right to start the postponed main event on the pole. Outside polesitter Dave Blaney out-dragged him down the front straightaway within seconds after the green flag, however, After Jac Haudenschild's fourth-corner spin brought out the caution flag late in the second lap, "The Buckeye Bullet" opened a 10 car- length lead on the field within two laps. Blaney drove the #10 Vivarin J&J into lapped traffic during the sixth lap, only to have Sammy track him down and pass him for the lead deep in turn four three laps later. Jeff, who passed Kenny Jacobs on the front straightaway for third place early in the seventh lap, made it a three-car battle for the lead 10 laps into the race. "The Buckeye Bullet" regained first place midway through the 13th lap. He was still in first place when Greg Hodnett stopped the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim in turn four with a blown engine the next time around. While the caution flag was still out, Blaney discovered his left rear tire was losing air pressure. Sammy returned to first place when Blaney coasted into the work area so his crew could replace the punctured rubber. Jeff chased Sammy into lapped traffic during the 20th lap, and took the lead in the second corner with three laps remaining. Sammy was eight car-lengths behind when Jeff took the checkered flag. Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Andy Hillenburg finished in third place, ahead of Kinser, Lance Dewease, Blaney, New Yorker Craig Keel, Haudenschild, Jacobs and Joe Gaerte. Hillenburg started the second 25-lap feature outside Jeff on the front row. They raced wheel-to-wheel into the first corner and Andy took the lead, only to have Jeff pass him deep in turn three. Jeff opened a 10-car-length lead within three laps, and entered lapped traffic four laps later. Sammy, the 14th-fastest qualifier in the 39-car field, started the feature outside the seventh row. He passed nine cars during the first seven laps before trading third place with Hodnett for two laps. Sammy passed Greg in turn three late in lap eight. Hodnett regained the spot in the first corner the next time around, but slid out of the low groove in turn two and allowed Sammy to pass him back. Blaney caught Hodnett midway through the race, and passed him for fourth place four laps later. Hillenburg, unable to challenge for the lead in the latter stages, was steering his #2 STP J&J out of turn three when Jeff took the checkered flag. Sammy held off "The Buckeye Bullet" during the white-flag lap to finish third. Rounding out the top 10 were Hodnett, Kinser, Dewease, "The Wild Child," Keel and Johnny Herrera.
