Mark Kinser Dominates Eagle Nationals Prelim By Richard Day EAGLE, NE (June 25) - Mark Kinser has always enjoyed racing in Nebraska. With five career victories at Eagle Raceway - including three Eagle Nationals championships - and four victories in seven main events at I-80 Speedway, it's easy to understand why. Kinser, the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader, dominated opening night of the 16th Annual Eagle Nationals Friday, earning the Vivarin Quick-Time Award, winning the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and leading all 25 laps in the Preliminary Feature. His runner-up run in the Channellock Dash was all that kept him from perfection. "The Mopar car was definitely on kill tonight," Mark said. "This thing has so much horsepower, I didn't really have to worry about getting off the throttle in traffic. I knew I could get right back on it and still have power to spare. "We're glad to be locked in for tomorrow night. The crew can relax a bit tomorrow, and if all goes right we'll be right back here (in victory lane)." The $5,000 victory was Kinser's fourth in 10 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Preliminary Features this season. It also entitled him to start Saturday's Channellock Dash on the pole. Kinser earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature outside the front row by racing into second place from outside the second row in the Channellock Dash. Cousin Steve Kinser won his series-leading seventh Channellock Dash and started the feature on the pole. Mark steered the #5M Mopar Maxim around Steve to take the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. Tyler Walker won a back-straightaway drag race with "The King of the Outlaws" to take over second place. Mark opened a 1.3-second advantage within four laps, only to have Walker narrow the gap to .5 seconds in dense lapped traffic two laps later. Kinser pulled off a daring move between Stevie Smith and Kasey Kahne in the first corner to increase his lead to 1.8 seconds early in the 10th lap. "That's what 15 more years experience will do for you," Mark said of breathtaking pass. "Tyler is a a charger. He, Donny Schatz, Shane Stewart and Kasey Kahne are the next generation coming along. They're awful tough already." A battle for fifth place between Johnny Herrera and Schatz started midway through the race. Herrera kept Eagle Raceway owner Craig Cormack's #1BK Networks Eagle ahead of the 1997 Rookie of the Year despite Schatz' repeated attempts to pass. Walker fell off the pace early in the 16th lap when he allowed his family's #35 Air Sep Maxim to clip the retaining wall in turn four. Kinser enjoyed a 3.7-second advantage during lap 17, then increased it to 6.8 seconds as he lapped up to eighth place with 4 1/2 laps remaining. Mark took the checkered flag with 7.8 seconds to spare. Defending and seven-time Eagle Nationals champion Steve Kinser and 1989 titlist Jac Haudenschild received the other two automatic starting positions in Saturday's Channellock Dash by finishing third and fourth. Herrera maintained fifth place by holding off Schatz' last-lap pass attempt in the fourth corner. Completing the top 10 were Danny Lasoski, Tim Shaffer, 14th-starting Kevin Gobrecht and Sammy Swindell, the Eagle Nationals champion in 1981 and 1992. Mark received his 17th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year after pacing time trials with an 11.479-second, 104.539 m.p.h., lap. Kahne, making his debut in Junior Holbrook's #8H Energy Release Eagle, was the 14th-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field. He finished fourth in the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and 18th in the Preliminary Feature. Stewart, who returned to his family's #9S Melton Truck Lines J&J after driving for Holbrook for three races, flipped during the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He finished third in the "B" Feature and 19th in the evening's main event. Travis Whitney wasn't as fortune. The #7S Aamco Transmissions was too severely damaged for him to continue racing after he crashed during the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. WoO
