SCHATZ CONTINUES BIG MONEY SUCCESS WITH AUSSIE OPEN WIN
BRISBANE, QLD - (January 12) - Donny Schatz kept his pace of taking sprint car racing's biggest paydays by capturing Saturday night's $20,000 Australian Open at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway. Schatz raced the Rush Racing No. 15 J&J to victory in the 50-lap event after a mid-race battle with fellow Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series competitor Daryn Pittman.
The victory was his 15th career World Series Sprintcar (WSS) triumph and second Australian Open title, which concluded the 2007/08 Wanless World Series Sprintcar Championship season.
A pair of fifth place finishes in the first heat and first dash event earned Schatz the ninth starting position in the 50-lap main. After quickly working his way into the top five, the Fargo, N.D. resident was in third following a early caution flag.
On lap ten, he made his way into second and spent six laps chasing down Pittman. Once he caught the leader the two raced side by side for a lap and half until Schatz seized control on lap 18. The two-time WoO champion never relinquished the post and stormed away to pick up his fifth victory on Australian soil in seven starts since he arrived "Down Under" on December 24th.
Schatz will concluded his Australian Assault Tour next week with three nights of action in the Outlaws Down Under V event at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway. Schatz is the three-time defending champion of the Outlaws Down Under finale and has won 18 feature events at the track in the last three years.
