Outlaws Run 'Night For All Seasons' at Devil's Bowl By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (April 24) - A "night for all seasons" for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series turned out to be the richest in Devil's Bowl Speedway history Saturday. While Danny Lasoski's flag-to-flag victory in the rain-delayed Spring Nationals pushed him back into first place in the point standings, Sammy Swindell dedicated his 25th Annual Winter Nationals triumph to a longtime friend who died of cancer earlier in the week. In all, Devil's Bowl Owner and Promoter Lanny Edwards rewarded more than $105,000 to the world's best sprint car racers following the double-feature event. "The Dude" picked up where he left off after the 26th Annual Spring Nationals main event was postponed due to rain on March 27th. He led the remaining 22 laps and moved seven points ahead of Mark Kinser, who finished third. "The Beef Packers car was really good tonight," said, Lasoski, who also won the "A" Feature at Tulsa Speedway the night before. "We're going to try to win three races in 24 hours, but there are a lot of good race cars out here." Lasoski burst into the lead as the green flag fell on the ninth- lap restart and entered lapped traffic within four laps. Gary Wright took over second place when Kinser slowed behind a pack of backmarkers midway through lap 17. Brooke Tatnell set up a six-lap dash to the checkered flag when a mechanical problem in the #7K Kele & Associates J&J forced him to stop on the front stretch. The caution period was a blessing for Lasoski. "The race track was pretty sticky, so I could pick my way until I got to the lapped cars," Danny said. "They were throwing a lot of mud, and I ran out of tear-offs right before that yellow. I told my guys I needed more because I couldn't see where I was going." With a fresh supply of tear-offs and a clear track ahead of him, Lasoski quickly opened a comfortable advantage. He took the checkered flag as Wright raced through the fourth corner. Kinser finished third, ahead of Johnny Herrera, Swindell, Frankie Kerr, Steve Kinser, Jimmy Carr, Andy Hillenburg and Stevie Smith. The racing surface was even faster when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series started the 26th Annual Winter Nationals feature program. Kinser lowered the single-lap record he set six years ago by .083 seconds when he circled the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 13.531 seconds, an average speed of 133.028 m.p.h. He received his fifth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for his record-breaking effort. Andy Hillenburg, the 1994 Spring Nationals champion, earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the pole by winning the Channellock Dash. Swindell also passed Wright, the Preliminary Feature winner last October 16th, to gain the other front-row starting position. Hillenburg and Swindell raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway as the green flag fell in the main event. Swindell steered his #1 Channellock Stealth into the high groove in turn one to take the lead, and never relinquished it. Sammy started building a comfortable advantage as Wright coasted into the infield during the second lap. He was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic during the seventh lap. The three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion was racing away from the field when Tatnell stopped in the fourth corner late in the 11th lap. Swindell returned to his comfort zone soon after the green flag replaced the yellow as Hillenburg and Mark Kinser battled for the runner-up spot. Sammy caught the backmarkers again within eight laps. Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove in turn three to pass Hillenburg for second the next time around, and started narrowing the gap quickly in dense traffic. Hillenburg regained the runner-up spot with a low move through the fourth corner late in the 25th lap. Swindell was 12 car-lengths ahead of Hillenburg when Frankie Kerr stopped high in the second corner late in the 27th lap. Four lapped cars restarting between Swindell and Hillenburg kept Andy from putting any serious pressure on the leader during the final three laps. Sammy claimed the $10,000 first prize with 10 car-lengths to spare. He dedicated the victory to Mae Hill, who passed away a few days before. "The whole Channellock team has been working hard," Sammy said. "We've just been trying some things that haven't worked out. We've had some good runs here lately, and I think we're back on track." The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series only awarded show-up points for the Winter Nationals make-up program because the double-feature event started last season. The series will return to Knoxville Raceway for the first time since last year's epic Amoco Knoxville Nationals championship feature for a $78,720 event Friday and Saturday. WoO
