Mark Kinser Takes Spring Nationals Opener By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (March 21) - After going winless in 12 years of racing at Devil's Bowl Speedway, Mark Kinser is starting to really appreciate Lanny Edwards' semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. The defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws champion won his second consecutive feature race at the Devil's Bowl Friday when the series opened the 24th Annual Spring Nationals before a capacity crowd. TNN: The Nashville Network televised the action live on its TNN Motor Madness program. Kinser, who set the track's one-lap record in 1993, earned his second Channellock Fast-Time Award of the season by pacing the qualifying session with a 15.391-second lap. Although picking the #6 inversion pill put him outside the third row at the beginning of the five-lap race, Mark finished behind Stevie Smith, Andy Hillenburg and Danny Lasoski for the right to start the 30-lap Preliminary Feature outside the second row. Smith, enjoying his best event of the year in his new #19 sprinter, burst into the lead as the green flag fell. Mark drove his #5M Wirtgen Maxim past Lasoski and Hillenburg during the opening lap, and took the high line around Smith in turn four to take the lead two laps later. Kinser was racing away from the field when the caution flag fell early in the fourth lap. A nozzle line on the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim came loose, forcing Johnny Herrera to stop in the second corner. Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J past Smith for the runner-up spot as the race resumed, and was catching the leader when a broken suspension on the #1 Channellock Gambler caused First Heat Race winner Sammy Swindell to spin in turn four two laps later. Smith regained the runner-up spot with a fourth-corner pass of Hillenburg as the green flag replaced the yellow. Steve Kinser, the defending Spring Nationals champion, raced into 10th place from outside the 11th row during the first seven laps. He and Fourth Heat Race winner Dave Blaney exchanged the position twice before Mark entered lapped traffic late in the 10th lap. As Mark extended his advantage to a half-straightaway midway through the race, the battles behind him raged. Hillenburg and Joe Gaerte passed Smith during the race's middle stages, only to have Stevie come back to claim third after a 23rd-lap restart. Mark cut through lapped traffic like it was warm butter, and took the checkered flag with Hillenburg racing through turn four. "The #5M Wirtgen Maxim was working really good tonight," Mark said in victory lane. "The crew did a really good job, and they deserve this victory. "When you're fortunate enough to grab the lead, you usually don't change your line until somebody starts breathing on you. Fortunately, that didn't happen, so we didn't have to change our game plan." Hillenburg, the 1994 Spring Nationals champion, said he would like to be able to move up a spot in Saturday's main event. "We're going to have to make a few adjustments," Hillenburg said. "We were just a little too tight at the end of the straightaways tonight. We'll get that taken care of and, hopefully, we'll be back up here again tomorrow night." "The King of the Outlaws," whose last-lap pass of Tyler Walker in the First Heat Race put him in the "A" Feature, settled for the final automatic starting position in Saturday's Vivarin Dash by finishing fourth. "We went out late and had a tire that was out of balance in qualifying and qualified bad," Steve said. "We were going pretty good in the feature. At the end, I should have gotten down into some rubber in (turn) four, but I let Stevie get back by me. I'm just glad to finish fourth from where we started." Jac Haudenschild raced into fifth place from inside the seventh row. Blaney finished sixth, ahead of 21st-starting Jeff Swindell, Gaerte, Lasoski and former Devil's Bowl track champion Gary Wright.
