Steve Kinser Takes Winter Nationals' Opener By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (October 20) - Although the race he won when the World of Outlaws opened Devil's Bowl Speedway's 22nd Annual Winter Nationals Friday was only a Preliminary Feature, it went a long way in proving that Steve Kinser is still "The King of the Outlaws." Among the 55 cars in the field were 18 of the top 20 in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, all four World of Outlaws titlists, eight previous Devil's Bowl "A" Feature winners and track champions from across the country. The competition was so fierce that 1995 World of Outlaws champion Dave Blaney was the last to qualify for the evening's main event. Kinser, who started inside the second row, raced with the leaders while defending Winter Nationals champion Sammy Swindell and 1994 Spring Nationals titlist Andy Hillenburg took their turns in first place. Sammy, the winningest driver in Devil's Bowl history, raced around Vivarin Dash winner Danny Lasoski in turn one to take the lead within seconds after the green flag fell. Kinser took over second place with a high move in the fourth corner the next time around. Hillenburg, the runner-up in the "B" Feature, started the main event inside the fifth row. He passed three cars during the first two laps, and roared into fourth following a third-lap caution. He took the low line into turn four to pass "The Dude" for third place late in lap four. Swindell was 10 car-lengths ahead of Kinser when Snap-on Tools Heat Race winners Greg Hodnett and Chad Mellenberndt collided and spun in turn three late in the sixth lap. Sammy was racing away from Steve again when the race resumed, only to have his lead dissolve as the caution flag flew again. Kinser kept pace with Swindell when the green flag replaced the yellow, but Hillenburg blew into the runner-up spot with a turn-three pass late in the seventh lap. Hillenburg was gaining on Sammy when a broken rear end in the #1 Hooters Gambler allowed him to race past as the leaders entered turn one early in lap nine. Hillenburg caught the backmarkers midway through the race, and kept his #2 STP J&J in the lead for 5 3/4 laps. Kinser executed a fourth-corner pass in dense lapped traffic to take over first place late in the 16th lap. They exchanged first place two laps later before "The King of the Outlaws" surged ahead. Kinser had his #11 Quaker State Maxim six car-lengths ahead of Hillenburg when he took the checkered flag. "Yeah, it was a fun race," Kinser said when announcer Jack Miller asked him if he enjoyed the race. "It's really fun when you get here. "I was able to hold my own high in (turns) three and four, but I had some trouble in one and two both low and high. This is a new car; we're just searching for what feels right. I feel like we gained a lot on it tonight." Although he didn't win, Hillenburg was happy with his performance. "We had a pretty good time. We started back there in ninth, but we came up through there and took the lead for a little bit. We just didn't keep it long enough. "After Steve passed me back, I was setting my own pace and started running the low groove. I got a little anxious and started running it hard trying to catch him. Sometimes, that just makes it worse. We just got outrun tonight, but we're happy with second." Mark Kinser, a Vivarin Dash crash victim, passed Lasoski late to finish third. Rounding out the top 10 were Jeff Swindell, Blaney, Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild, 16th-starting Johnny Herrera, EcoWater Fast-Time Award winner Keith Kauffman and World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Randy Hannagan. Stevie Smith, the eighth-place finisher in the "B" Feature, received an early Christmas present when brother-in-law Lance Blevins, future brother-in-law Aaron Berryhill, 1995 Devil's Bowl track champion Bob Ewell and Tommie Estes, Jr., scratched out of the evening's main event. Starting at the back of the pack, Smith drove the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim past 10 cars to finish 14th.
