"The Dude" continues to show his dominance at Knoxville Speedway.
Lasoski wins in Iowa again, gunning to regain points lead at Duel In The Dakotas.
CONCORD, NC (July 3, 2002) -- Racing at some tracks can be second nature to some people. Such is the case with defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Champion Danny "The Dude" Lasoski and Knoxville (IA) Raceway. It is a place that Lasoski knows well, and he continued his domination of the popular, half-mile oval, winning the NAPA Classic for the second year in a row. It was a good night, heading into next month's Knoxville Nationals, the most prestigious race in sprint car racing. The feature win, his 10th "A" feature win of the season, is also Lasoski's 75th at Knoxville. The win moved him into a temporary tie with Steve Kinser for the WoO points lead.
"I'd just like to thank J.D. Byrider and everyone involved with Tony Stewart Motorsports for sticking with me," Lasoski said. "Jimmy Carr (Crew Chief) runs a great operation -- I trust him with my life. Massey Motorsports, American Compressed Steel, Eagle Chassis, Hoosier Tires, Kistler Engines -- all these people make it possible for me. It just feels great to get back and win at the track that I consider my home."
Lasoski, who finished fifth in the previous night's preliminary event, was quick qualifier for the 10th time in 2002. After winning his heat race, Lasoski started the feature from the outside pole position. Lasoski grabbed the lead from Stevie Smith on lap nine and held on to the end of the 40-lap event, earning a season-high $20,000 for the victory.
"I was kind of experimenting, running the top, getting into the corner, and then coming down across the middle. It would've been a big surprise to see him get by me there at the end."
The Outlaws continued their busy 4th-of-July week Tuesday night, running at Husets Speedway in Brandon, SD. After qualifying third, "The Dude" finished sixth in the "A" feature, which resulted in losing the points lead to Kinser. He now trails by 16 points.
The "Greatest Show on Dirt" continues their assault on the Dakotas with the annual Duel In The Dakotas at Red River Valley Speedway at West Fargo, ND. Both races on July 5th and 6th will be the first televised this year on Speed Channel, shown on July 18th and 25th respectively. The series will then move to Cedar Lake Speedway in Somerset, WI on Monday, July 8th.
