Danny Lasoski brings IROC experience to World of Outlaws

LAS VEGAS -- Danny Lasoski loves to race.

A veteran on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car circuit, Lasoski has made a living winning races on the dirt tracks across the country. This weekend, "The Dude", as he is known to fans and fellow drivers, comes to the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with hopes of repeating his 2003 fall sweep.

His love of racing also has allowed him to take advantage of an opportunity only 12 professional drivers get to do each year -- race in the Crown Royal International Race of Champions series. It gives him a chance to switch from dirt to asphalt and race against the top drivers in the world.

"It's just an honor to be invited to run the series," said Lasoski, who finished third in last weekend's race in Atlanta. "You have been selected as one of the 12 best guys in America to compete. You race in pretty much equally prepared cars against the best drivers."

The IROC races take place on NASCAR tracks, giving the NASCAR drivers an edge in the racing. But Lasoski, and fellow Outlaws racer and IROC competitor Steve Kinser, are undaunted by the advantage given to the NASCAR drivers.

"With World of Outlaws cars, what you see is what you get," Lasoski said. "We have no pits stops and neither does IROC. You have to be patient running on the IROC surfaces and not run the tires off the cars."

Tony Stewart, 2000 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion, owns Lasoski's Outlaw car and has been instrumental in helping him run the IROC car. Stewart has helped Lasoski learn patience.

All the hard work and advice paid off for Lasoski in April when he won the IROC race at Texas Motor Speedway, something he called a dream come true. Lasoski held off a late charge by Nextel Cup driver Kevin Harvick to win the race.

Now that Lasoski has a win under his belt, he wants to have his say in setting the IROC rules in the future.

"I want to talk to the IROC president about buying some sprint cars and running this series on dirt for one race, but I don't see that happening," Lasoski said.

This weekend, Lasoski's mind is solely focused on a strong finish at LVMS to wrap up his 2004 season.

"LVMS has done a great job with this track," Lasoski said. "The track is second to none, I love running here. The track has been prepped really well the past few years, and I can't think of a better place to end the season."

Lasoski is second in the overall championship standings for the World of Outlaws. It will be his fourth runner-up finish in the past six years. Lasoski won the championship in 2002. With a new sponsor, Bass Pro Shops, in tow for next year, his eyes are already set on the 2005 season.

"Our goals remain the same for next year," he said. "Try to win the Knoxville Nationals and of course, win the World of Outlaws Championship."

Practice for both nights of racing is set to begin at 6 p.m., with qualifying taking place at 6:30. Pit gates open at 2 p.m., and spectator gates open at 5 p.m.

Fans may purchase reserved or general admission tickets for the event. Reserved blue tickets are $35, reserved white tickets are $30 and general admission tickets are $25. Pit passes are available for $10 and those wanting a pit pass must be at least 14 years of age. Ticket prices do not include tax.
