Countdown to the World of Outlaws Return to Las Vegas: 6 Days
Concord, NC-- February 20, 2009--The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Thursday, February 26. The series has competed at the half-mile in 11 different seasons dating back to 1996. For 11 consecutive days the events from each of those years will be highlighted in chronological order, continuing today with the series five races at the half-mile in 2001.
Andy Hillenburg was victorious on the opening night of the spring event on March 2 for the World of Outlaws at Las Vegas in 2001 taking the lead from now three-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz in lapped traffic with just two circuits remaining to pick up the preliminary feature win. Danny Lasoski was fourth, with Craig Dollansky sixth, three-time series champion Sammy Swindell seventh and Joey Saldana eighth. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that competed in the race include Jac Haudenschild, Jason Meyers, 20-time series champion Steve Kinser and current World of Outlaws team owner Kasey Kahne
Danny Wood scored the win on the second preliminary night, with Kinser and Lasoski trailing him. Dollansky was fifth, with Haudenschild sixth, Saldana seventh and Schatz eighth. Also in action were Meyers and Kahne.
The finale of the three-day event saw Danny Lasoski dominate all 30 laps to pick up the $20,000 pay day. It was his first of four wins on the season en route to claiming the series championship. Dollansky was second, with Saldana fourth, Kinser seventh and Meyers 10th. Also in action were Schatz, Haudenschild and Kahne.
The tradition continued in 2001 with the World of Outlaws wrapping up the season in Las Vegas as. Brad Furr made the trip east from California worth it, as he led all 30 laps to pick up the win in the preliminary feature on November 2. It was Furr's first career World of Outlaws win. Joey Saldana was second, with Steve Kinser fourth, Danny Lasoski fifth, Craig Dollansky sixth, Sammy Swindell seventh and Jason Meyers eighth. Also in action was Donny Schatz, and current World of Outlaws team owner Kasey Kahne. Steve Kinser began the night by turning a lap of 13.942 seconds in time trials to establish a new track record.
The season finale saw Andy Hillenburg take the lead from Brad Furr on the 10th lap and lead the rest of the way to pocket $17,000. Kinser was third, with Saldana fourth, Swindell fifth and Lasoski ninth. Also in action was Schatz, Meyers, Dollansky and Kahne.
