Hillier Solidifies 20th Place in Point Standings
HARTFORD, OH (June 1) -- Although Chad Hillier finished 24th in Friday's "A" Feature at Sharon Speedway, the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate increased his advantage over fellow rookies Tony Bruce Jr. and Sam Hafertepe Jr.
It was a rough evening for DIRT Incorporated, but Hillier secured a spot in the 35-lap main event -- and 20th place in the point standings -- by using his first provisional of the season.
"It was a pretty tough night for us," Hillier said. "Nothing wanted to go our way. The motor messed up in qualifying, so we didn't qualify well. We lost the motor in our heat race and the left rear tire blew up in the 'B.' We never got going in the feature, so we just rolled around where we started."
Hillier's 13.762-second lap around the Blaney family's semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval was the 35th-fastest in the 37-car field. The engine in the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim lost power during the final lap of the Third Heat Race.
"We almost rolled over in the 'B' when the left rear tire blew up," Hillier said. "It was on its way over, but it stopped before it tipped over. There were only a few laps left, so we just took it to the trailer and put on a new tire.
"We used our first provisional of the year. We should have used one earlier in the year, but we held out. We figured we should use one now since everybody is going to get two more in a month. We were one point ahead of Bruce coming in, so now we're 28 ahead. He didn't make it out of the 'B' either. We forfeited our start money by using the provisional, but we needed the points."
Hillier ranks second in Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year race, 356 points behind Australian Kerry Madsen.
The only driver to win all three sprint car championships at Skagit Speedway hopes to qualify for Saturday's "A" Feature at Eldora Speedway outright so he can save his remaining provisional for another time when luck isn't on the team's side. Hillier finished 10th in the "B" Feature when the World of Outlaws raced at "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" April 13th.
"We're ready to head back to Eldora," Hillier said. "Hopefully, the weather holds off so we can run the race. We didn't have a good run at Eldora in April. Everybody was just running around the bottom, but I hear they reconfigured the track so, hopefully, we can run around the top."
