Hillier Wins 'D' Feature at Knoxville Raceway

KNOXVILLE, IA (April 28) -- Chad Hillier's "D" Feature victory was exciting, but not enough to qualify the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate for the main event in Saturday's World of Outlaws Budweiser Shootout at Knoxville Raceway.

Driving the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim to victory in the "D" Feature gave Hillier the fifth starting position in the "C" Feature, but his fifth-place finish in that 10-lap race kept him from progressing in the 56-car program at "The Home of the Nationals."

"It was a tough night for us," Hillier said. "They only gave us one lap in qualifying for some reason. I'm not sure why that was; we had 65 cars in Florida and we ran two laps down there. I just didn't run a very good lap, and that put us behind the eight-ball. We got better later in the night. We were having some problems with the engine we just got back from (Don) Ott. We had to change it because we weren't getting any oil pressure. We changed that between the last-chance race ("D" Feature) and the "C." We couldn't quite get out of the "C," and (Jason) Sides and (Justin) Henderson were ahead of us in points so they got the provisionals."

Hillier's 16.227-second qualifying lap was 1.474 seconds off Jason Meyers' 122.009-MPH trip around the hallowed half-mile.

"We got some track time at Knoxville, which was good," the only driver to win championships in all three sprint car divisions at Skagit Speedway said. "In qualifying, I just missed the bottom in turn one and got out into the slick and lost time as I gathered it up. In the second corner, I got over the cushion a little bit. We got better toward the end of the night though."

Hillier left Knoxville Raceway ranked 22nd in the World of Outlaws' point standings, 13 points behind fellow rookie Sam Hafertepe Jr.

Hillier and DIRT Inc. will return to the World of Outlaws' tour Friday at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL, and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, AR.

"They've made Tri-City Speedway smaller, so I'm not sure what to expect there," Hillier said. "I've never even seen the Memphis track. There will be a lot of them this year we've never seen. We'll be racing for the first time on almost all of them. I saw a lot of them when I was (a crew member) with Selma Shell though."
