Swindell Dominates Harvest Classic Finale By Richard Day CALISTOGA, CA (September 5) - Sammy Swindell solved some pesky lapped traffic at Calistoga Speedway Sunday just in time to win his second Harvest Classic championship in three years. Swindell, who battled backmarkers and Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser for all but 10 of the 30 laps, claimed the $18,000 first prize for his sixth "A" Feature victory of the season. "I had some problems there in lapped traffic," Sammy said. "That one blue car (Eric Rossi) was probably taking up a little more room than he needed. I tried to get under him, but he ran down across me. With the track as fast as it was tonight, once you slowed down, it's pretty easy for someone to catch up with you." Kinser challenged Swindell for the lead until a flat right rear tire forced him into the pits with three laps remaining. "I think I had a little harder tire on than he (Mark) did," Swindell said. "We might have gone a little soft on the left rear, but the Channellock car was fast all night long. When we don't have any problems, this is where we expect to be (victory lane)." Swindell, Friday's opening-night preliminary feature winner, earned the right to start the main event on the pole by scoring the most points in the preliminary programs. Randy Hannagan, who started outside the third row, slowed on the front straightaway as the green flag waved. Brad Furr dodged the #1x NetTaxi Hurricane, but hit the outside retaining wall in turn one and flipped, bringing out the red flag. Swindell burst ahead of the field on the complete restart, and was 1.37 seconds ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the seventh lap. First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Stevie Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the high groove between the first and second corners to pass Danny Lasoski and Tim Shaffer during the first two laps to take over third place. Kinser narrowed the gap to .8 seconds by lap nine. He slowed behind Sean Fenn, however, allowing Swindell to open a 1.7-second advantage the next time around. The leaders restarted nose-to-tail after Brooke Tatnell stopped on the front stretch with suspension problems early in the 12th lap. Swindell controlled the restart and was 1.1 seconds ahead of Kinser when he caught the backmarkers again six laps later. Kinser caught Swindell in turn three late in the 24th lap, and they collided slightly as they raced wheel-to-wheel in the fourth corner. Sammy maintained the advantage and was .3 seconds ahead when "B" Feature winner Jac Haudenschild crashed in turn one early in lap 28. Kinser coasted into the pit area with a flat right rear tire during the caution period and restarted at the back of the pack. Swindell raced away from Smith as the race resumed and was 1.34 seconds ahead when he took the checkered flag for the third "A" Feature victory of his career at Calistoga Speedway. Shaffer finished the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 57th main event of the year in third place, ahead of Lasoski, Steve Kinser, Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race Donny Schatz, Andy Hillenburg, Johnny Herrera, 14th-starting Kevin Gobrecht and Jeff Swindell. Hillenburg was running fourth in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race when the engine in his #2 Luxaire J&J lost power. With the new power plant, he finished second in the "B" Feature and passed four cars to finish seventh in the main event. Jeff Swindell's crew replaced the engine in the #104+ Octane Boost J&J after the hot lap session. Mark Kinser, who saw his advantage in the point standings drop to 53 points over Lasoski, had a new engine in the #5M Mopar Maxim after taking his hot laps following the NAPA Auto Parts Heat Races. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will run a pair of $42,100 events next weekend, Friday at Kings Speedway and Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway. WoO
