SAMMY RECORDS FLAG-TO-FLAG VICTORY AT BRIDGEPORT By Richard Day BRIDGEPORT, NJ (August 8) - Bull & Hannah's Meat Snack officials must have had a strong feeling about Bridgeport Speedway when they chose it as the site of a Monday afternoon autograph session for Sammy Swindell. Sammy won a World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Bridgeport back on May 15, 1982, on his way to a second consecutive series championship, and the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout had not raced at the semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval in three years. Swindell came through for his sponsor in a big way Monday night when a record crowd packed Bridgeport Speedway, leading all 25 laps to win the main event. The $5,200 victory was Sammy's second in the last four World of Outlaws events, and his sixth of the year. Swindell, the third-fastest qualifier in the 27-car field, followed Jac Haudenschild across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the "A" Feature outside the front row. Sammy and "The Wild Child" raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway and into the first corner before Swindell drove the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins around Haudenschild in the second corner to take the lead. Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into the low groove in turn two to catch Swindell the next time around, but couldn't complete the pass for first place. The leaders entered lapped traffic with "The Wild Child" just inches from Sammy's rear bumper five laps into the race. Their battle for the lead pushed them 10 car-lengths ahead of the field. Steve Kinser, a World of Outlaws "A" Feature winner at Bridgeport on June 1, 1983, steered the #11 Valvoline Maxim to the deepest point in turn three to pass Kenny Jacobs for third place late in the seventh lap, and started reeling in Haudenschild. Swindell had a 10-car-length advantage when he approached a pack of backmarkers late in lap 11. Haudenschild caught Sammy, and pressured him for two laps. Jeff Swindell, who set Bridgeport's new one-lap record with a 17.601- second (127.834-m.p.h.) qualifying run, joined the front-runners midway through the race when he passed Jacobs for fourth place. Sammy cleared the backmarkers early in the 15th lap, and quickly padded his cushion. His 15-car-length advantage disintegrated three laps later, however, when Sid Blandford went for a spin in turn three, bringing out the only caution flag in the fast-paced feature race. Swindell ran away from the field when the green flag replaced the yellow, and entered lapped traffic again with four laps remaining. But he almost lost the lead early in the white-flag lap as he was lapping Gary Thayer in the first corner. He was taking the high line around the backmarker when Thayer slid out of the low groove, almost running Swindell into the outside retaining wall. Sammy escaped the near-catastrophe, and took the checkered flag with "The Wild Child" racing through turn four. "I wanted to get out front and stay there," Swindell said in victory lane. "There were a lot of slower cars in lapped traffic, but I thought I got through them pretty well until the last lap. I got a little scared when I got squeezed out of the groove there at the end." Kinser held off Jeff to finish the main event in third place. Rounding out the top 10 were Joe Gaerte, Dave Blaney, Jacobs, First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Fred Rahmer, Greg Hodnett and Stevie Smith. All three drivers from the Two Winners Racing team - Jeff Swindell, Gaerte and Hodnett - finished in the top 10 for the eighth time this year. Jeff also received his third Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the season.
