Swindell Sweeps Double-Feature Event at Bloomington By Richard Day

BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 19) - Sammy Swindell's 10-day emotional roller-coaster ride ended on a high note Wednesday as he made Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series history at Bloomington Speedway.

Four straight finishes of 14th or worse pushed the series' three- time champion from fifth to ninth place in the point standings. Among those was the heartbreaking State Fair Motor Speedway feature in which he led all but three laps but finished 14th when he ran out of fuel.

Swindell roared back into seventh place in the standings Wednesday by winning two 40-lap main events at Bloomington. The double-feature sweep made him the second driver in series history to win two main events in one day at the same track. His brother, Jeff, was the first to accomplish the feat - at Rolling Wheels Raceway on October 8, 1994. Sammy is the only driver to win "A" Features at different tracks on the same day. He won main events at New York State Fair Speedway and Rolling Wheels on October 12, 1991.

"The Channellock car was great tonight," Sammy said. "We had a chance to win some races last week, but things just went wrong. We got some bad breaks and things just didn't go our way.

"We've tried some new things this year with shocks and so on, and we've really had to work to get it figured out. I didn't think we'd be that far off when we started, especially during qualifying. We have a handle on it now and we're ready to go out and win a lot more races."

In the full racing program preceding the rain-delayed "A" Feature from April 14th, Swindell was the fourth-fastest qualifier. He won the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and earned the right to start the main event inside the second row by following Jac Haudenschild and Jimmy Carr across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. He passed Haudenschild for the lead in dense lapped traffic late in the 21st lap and cruised to the $8,000 victory.

"We had brake problems in the first race, so we needed to get back to the pits and work on that," Sammy said.

Before rain forced Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series officials to postpone the main event April 14th, Swindell qualified ninth-quick and won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He finished fourth in the Channellock Dash for the right to start the "A" Feature outside the second row.

Haudenschild burst into the lead from the outside pole, only to have Swindell pull off the same move he used to take the lead in the first feature. He steered the #1 Channellock Stealth to the lowest point between turns three and four to pass Haudenschild late in lap 12 and held off Danny Lasoski by two car-lengths for his fourth victory of the year.

"We hit an infield tire marker and broke a shock in the second race," Sammy said. "It made us really tight coming off the turns and that let the 83 (Lasoski) get a run on us."

Haudenschild and Carr raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway as the green flag fell in the first main event, only to have Kevin Gobrecht and Danny Smith tangle in turn four. Jac raced into the lead as the green flag replaced the yellow, and Sammy passed Carr for second place with an inside move through turns one and two.

Haudenschild entered lapped traffic with a six-car-length advantage during lap 14. Swindell caught him within six laps, however, and took the lead with a low move through turns three and four.

Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser and Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera joined the battle for first place during the 23rd lap. Herrera allowed the #1BK Networks Eagle to jump the cushion four laps later, however, and lost four positions. Kinser passed Haudenschild for second early in lap 31, but was in the third corner when Swindell took the checkered flag.

Donny Schatz finished third, ahead of Andy Hillenburg, Stevie Smith, Lasoski, Haudenschild, Johnny Herrera, Carr and Tyler Walker.

Haudenschild raced around polesitter Steve Kinser to take the lead as the green flag fell in the makeup feature. Swindell took the low line through turns one and two for second place early in lap four, and battled Jac for seven laps before taking over first place.

Lasoski, who started inside the third row, passed Haudenschild for fourth midway through the race, then used an inside move between the first and second corners to get by Smith for third three laps later.

"The Dude" steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle deep in turn two to pass Steve Kinser for the runner-up spot with six laps remaining. He made several runs at Sammy, but was two car-lengths behind at the checkered flag.

Kinser, an eight-time winner at his home town track, finished in third place. Completing the top 10 were Smith, Jeff Swindell, Herrera, Mark Kinser, Schatz, Hillenburg and Kerr.

Kerr replaced Jeff Shepard, who qualified for the 21st starting position but did not return Wednesday. Kerr started inside the 12th row and raced into 10th place.

Tyler Walker bypassed the work area and coasted into the pits with a fuel line problem as the cars lined up for the "A" Feature. Walker was unable to take the green flag, so Travis Whitney took his place.

Kevin Gobrecht, who replaced Dale Blaney in the #93 Amoco J&J a week after the Bloomington Speedway event was originally scheduled, raced into 18th place from outside the 12th row. WoO
