'Buckeye Bullet' Bolts to Victory at Bloomington By Richard Day BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 13) - Although race drivers can be extremely superstitious, racing on Friday the 13th has never bothered Dave Blaney. The winner of Friday's rain-delayed Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series event at Bloomington Speedway had won races on allegedly unlucky days before. "The Buckeye Bullet" won a World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Eldora Speedway on Friday, the 13th of August, and on April Fool's Day on his way to capturing the series' championship in 1995. He also won a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event last June 13th, at Kokomo Speedway. "The Vivarin/U.S. Print car was good all night," Blaney said in victory lane. "We hardly had to change anything - just a couple of minor things before the "A" Feature - and we took off." Blaney and the #10 Vivarin J&J were a little "off" before the feature, qualifying third-quick and finishing second in the Third Heat Race and the Vivarin Dash, but he atoned for it in the 40- lap main event. The $7,000 victory was his fourth of the year. "The Buckeye Bullet" took the high line around polesitter and Vivarin Dash winner Greg Hodnett as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and raced away from the 24-car field. Joe Gaerte passed Steve Kinser, winner of seven World of Outlaws "A" Features at Bloomington, early in the opening lap. Joe took the low line into the first corner to pass Hodnett for the runner-up spot the next time around, and continued his run to the front two laps later. He threatened to drive his #3G Gaerte Engines Stealth past Blaney early in lap four, then steered it deep into the fourth corner to take the lead seconds later. Gaerte entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap, and had a clear track ahead of him after Kevin Briscoe brought out the caution flag when he stopped with a mechanical problem in turn four three laps later. Channellock Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser raced into fifth place early lap 11, passing Sammy Swindell and Jac Haudenschild in turn one. Andy Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J past Hodnett deep in the first corner to take over third place three laps later. "The Buckeye Bullet" regained the lead with a low move in the second corner early in the 15th lap. "Joe snuck by me on the bottom," Blaney said. "He was really good on the bottom and we couldn't really do anything with him, so we just followed him for a while. He slipped up one time and we got back by him. After that, I just tried to run as hard as I could, wherever the lapped cars weren't." Hodnett passed Gaerte, then Hillenburg during the race's middle stages to finish in the runner-up spot for the second time this season. Swindell, the leader in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series driver standings, steered his #1 Channellock Gambler into the high groove to start his run toward the front with 10 laps remaining. He passed Gaerte for fifth on the front straightaway early in lap 31, then won another front-stretch drag race with Mark Kinser three laps later. He took the high line around Hillenburg in the first corner to claim third place with four laps remaining. Blaney enjoyed a comfortable advantage during the second half of the race and took the checkered flag with a straightaway to spare. "The track was pretty consistent all night," Blaney said. "It stayed good and heavy. "I tried to stay up high to keep the momentum rolling. My crew told me on the radio the last couple of laps I had a pretty good lead, so I didn't really take any chances. A straightaway lead here isn't really that much. All you have to do is jump the cushion one time and it's gone. "This race wore me out, and I hope it wore everyone else out, too, because I was just holding on those last few laps." Swindell finished the main event in third place, ahead of Hillenburg, Mark Kinser, Gaerte, Haudenschild, 14th-starting Jeff Swindell and Steve Kinser.
