STEVIE SMITH DOMINATES ATTICA OPENER By Richard Day ATTICA, OH (May 20) - The fierce battle for second place in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings between Stevie Smith and Sammy Swindell escalated Friday night at Attica Raceway Park. Smith regained the runner-up spot in the points race when he led all 25 laps to win the Preliminary Feature. Swindell overcame his qualifying woes by passing 10 cars en route to an eighth-place run in the evening's main event. Stevie started the Preliminary Feature on the front row next to Vivarin Dash winner Andy Hillenburg. The polesitter drove the #2 STP J&J into the lead immediately after the green flag fell, only to have Smith pass him high between turns one and two. Steve Kinser, winner of the World of Outlaws' "A" Features at Attica in 1990 and 1991, relegated Hillenburg to third place late in the opening lap with a low move in the fourth corner. Two laps later, Kinser tried to take the lead in the first corner, but Smith managed to keep the #77 MAC Tools J&J ahead of him. A sixth-lap collision that sent Greg Hodnett and Paul Weaver flipping in turn three temporarily stopped the race. Neither driver was injured in the mishap. When the green flag replaced the red, Dave Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J to the rim between the third and fourth corners to pass Hillenburg for third place. Three laps later, Jac Haudenschild passed Andy deep in turn four. While Smith maintained the lead by staying in the low groove, Kinser was steering the #11 Valvoline Maxim all over the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval to challenge him. "The King of the Outlaws" moved into the middle groove while Blaney reeled in the leaders midway through the race. Kinser was attempting to move into the high groove with 10 laps remaining when he allowed the #11 to slip over the cushion in turn one. He drove the #11 over the bank to avert a spin, and was in sixth place when he returned to the racing surface in turn two. Smith entered lapped traffic with a two-car-length advantage with nine laps remaining. He was three car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he took the checkered flag. "I'd like to thank my car owner, Al Hamilton, and my new sponsor, MAC Tools," Smith told the near-capacity crowd from victory lane. "They give me a great race car to drive." The $4,000 victory was Smith's second in a Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout Preliminary Feature this season. He also won the second qualifying feature race at St. Augustine Speedway in February. Hillenburg passed "The Wild Child" with three laps remaining to finish in third place. Kinser raced past Ecowater Quick-Time Award winner Jeff Shepard late in the 23rd lap, and was inches from the #22 Pennzoil Maxim's rear bumper with the checkered flag flying. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Kevin Huntley, Swindell, Kenny Jacobs and Joe Gaerte. Jeff Swindell was leading the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race when the engine exploded in the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim. After crew chief Scott Benic replaced his power plant, Jeff won the "B" Feature and finished 11th in the evening's main event.
