Toyota reduces driver lineup, forces Lapierre to sit out final two rounds

The No. 8 Toyota Hybrid has decided to have Nicolas Lapierre spend the remainder of the WEC season on the sidelines.

Nicolas Lapierre will not return with Toyota for the remainder of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship and now, his future with the organization is in doubt.

Motorsport.com recently reported rumblings that Lapierre was having talks with Nissan. Those rumors were denied, but Nissan would now be one of his limited options (and one of his best) should the relationship with Toyota be coming to a close. He has been offered a contract for next seaosn, but the details of the deal are unknown and he has yet to agree to its terms. Lapierre tweeted about the news.

He was the championship leader before Fuji and the team cited 'personal reasons' in regards to why he missed that race. Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi will contest the final two rounds without a third co-driver.

“Based on its experience in Fuji, the team considers it is the best option to continue with a two-driver lineup of Anthony and Sébastien in Shanghai and for the remaining races of the season,” a weekend preview from the team read.
