Porsche tops wet opening Spa practice

Porsche topped the times in the first practice session for Saturday's second round of the World Endurance Championship at Spa.

In wet conditions, Marc Lieb set a time of 2m16.616s in the #18 Porsche 919 Hybrid to head the reigning champion Toyota squad.

The Japanese team's session was punctuated by a sizeable accident for Kazuki Nakajima, who hit the back of Oliver Jarvis' Audi R18 e-tron quattro on the Kemmel straight.

The Japanese driver was taken first to the circuit's medical centre and then to the local hospital for precautionary checks.

The session was stopped after Nico Hulkenberg got his first public running in the third Porsche 919 Hybrid that he shares with Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber this weekend, the Force India driver finishing the session in fourth place.

In LMP2, the Strakka Racing Dome led the way on a 2m32.672s lap, with Jonny Kane setting the lap early in the session.

The all-new ESM Ligiers completed 30 laps during the session as they continue to explore the cars which were completed earlier in the week at Magny-Cours.

Porsche also emerged at the front in both the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am classes.

The #91 Porsche Team Manthey car crewed by new recruits Sven Muller and Kevin Estre led with a 2m36.065s, while in the Am division it was the Abu Dhabi-Proton 911 RSR at the top of the class with a 2m39.885s, set by Klaus Bachler.

The forecast for the rest of the meeting is currently mixed, with Saturday currently stating the chance of showers around the Ardennes region.
